温泉タウン戸倉上山田にも「銀座通り」があります。上山田温泉の本通りと戸倉温泉の本通りをつなぐ小道です。昔は足袋屋さんがあったぐらい、何でも買い物ができた通りから名前が来ているそうです。現在では主に饅頭屋さん、信州味噌蔵、甘露煮屋さんで今もにぎわっています。

その銀座通りのお正月の習慣は餅つき大会。数年前に始まったが、しっかり根付いてきた。今年はうちの二男、ケネス君もつきました。
やはり、銀座通りの餅つき大会に参加しないと、新しい年は始まらない。

In Tokyo, you'll find the original "Ginza" shopping district. Here in our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, we also have a Ginza, the side street that connects Kamiyamada Onsen's main street with that of Togura Onsen. In the past, there were all kinds of shops for locals to get their necessities -- even a tabi sock maker. Nowadays, the main shops are a miso maker, manju cake maker, and fish shop. It's still our town's main shopping street, but on a much smaller scale.

The shops here put on an annual Mochi Pounding event at the beginning of the year. The tradition only started a few years ago, but has become a regular fixture. Our number two son, Kenny, was old enough to do some pounding this year.

この間、湯布院の視察の際、行く途中で博多に一泊しました。屋台で食べたり、博多ラーメンにデビューしたり、キャナルシティで買い物したりしました。

朝は駅へ歩いた時に、聖福寺に寄ってみました。寄ってみたと言うか、何となく引っ張られた。大通りから面白そうな庭園の壁を見て、行ってみたら聖福寺でした。

日本初の禅寺だそうです。座禅には興味があるけれど、その寺の庭園は感動的でした。瓦で工夫した壁から、今まで見た中で一番格好良い滝、とにかくどこを見ても、よだれが出るぐらいに興奮しました。これは本当に「クールジャパン」!

During my recent trip to Yufuin, on the way I spent a night in Fukuoka City. It was a just a brief stay, but I managed to try one of the nighttime foodstalls, eat Hakata Ramen, and go shopping at Canal City.

Walking to Hakata Station in the morning, I caught a glimpse of what looked like an interesting garden wall. Upon further inspection, it turned out to be Shofukuji, the first Zen Buddhism temple in Japan.

While I am interested in Zen meditation, it was the garden and landscaping that captivated me. From the walls that incorporated roof tiles into their designs, to what has to be the coolest waterfall I've ever seen, everywhere I looked at the temple's grounds had my salivating in fascination.

聖福寺　Shofukuji

12月17日の講演会の為に、ＣＷニコルさんが一日早くこの温泉タウン戸倉上山田にお越しになってくれました。「戸倉上山田の存在さえ知らないか」と私が心配していたところ、ご本人は以前に来た事があると言ってくれました。嬉しかった。

せっかくだったから、ニコル氏を戸倉上山田の河辺と周辺の山々の見所を案内しました。

温泉街の中心に千曲川が流れていて、その河川敷は今、工事が行われている:コンクリートテトラポッド接地。
「理由を知りたいが、どの国でも、観光地の所の川で美の無いテトラポッドを置かないよ」と残念に仰いました。

大正橋下流の杏畑を次に案内しました。杏宝園の社長と若手の金子さんが河川敷の自然の良さを活かせて美味しい杏を育っている事を説明しました。「エコツーリズムに向いているが、見栄えを磨きなさい」とのアドバイス。

その後、戸倉駅の上の天狗公園に連れて行きました。「親戚だ」と笑って、言ってくれました。

最後は今度、上山田川の山、温泉街の上に立っている荒砥城。侍の気持ちになりました。

17日の講演会は期待しています。場所は上山田温泉の清風園の7階、お時間は１３：００から。是非に、おいでやす。

由布院は敵わない所がありながら、長野（特に軽井沢）と変わらない部分も多い様に感じました。私が期待し過ぎていたせいか、ふたを開けたらちょっとがっかりしました。

由布院の賑やかなショッピング街で最初に入ってみたお店は手ぬぐい屋さんだった。（ご存知の方が多いけど、私は手ぬぐいフェティッシュで、数十枚を持っています。）　由布院らしい手拭いを買いたいと思ったら・・・無いと言われた。見れば見るほど、トリックアート美術館とかクラシックアメ車展示館など、軽井沢や那須と同じような店の並び。

電線や電柱は由布院ぐらいが地下にしていると思ったら、戸倉上山田と同じぐらいに多い。

看板は場所によって自然な格好していたが、思い切り派ではのもあった。

街並はもっと整備されて、もっと統一されていると期待していました。

そして、夜は地元の旅館組合の方々と交流した時に、それまで聞いていた「由布院の成功している秘密」の伝説は色々と聞いてみました。

例えば、それぞれの宿の料理長たちがお互いの調理場で集まって、情報交換をしている事とか、

周りの畑がさら地にならない様に地元の農家から優先的に仕入している事、

の様な事は業界の中では伝説となっていました。

しかし、地元の組合員とお話ししたら、

料理長の情報交換はほんの一部の宿だけ。大体オーナーシェフの小さい所のみ。

食材は地元じゃ採れ切れない。もちろん、地産地消はしているけど、やれ切れないので外からも取る。

伝説と現実が違って、吃驚しました。

敵わない所と変わらないところ、良い勉強になりました。

由布院へ行く人には大分や福岡から電車、高速バス、高速道路など、様々な方法がある。今回は私が初めて訪ねるとの事で、せっかくだったからＪＲ「由布院の森」と言う特別列車に乗って行きました。

戸倉上山田温泉の地元のしなの鉄道は来年度にイベント列車を購入する様に計画しているそうです。「由布院の森」など、九州の特徴的な電車は良い参考になると思いました。

Access to Yufuin, Japan's most popular onsen resort, is by freeway, highway bus or JR train from Oita City and/or Fukuoka City. Perhaps the most fitting is taking JR's Yufuin no Mori special train from Fukuoka, which is what I took.

Here in our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, our local private train operator Shinano Railway is planning on introducing a special sightseeing train next fiscal year. I think Kyushu's special trains such as Yufuin no Mori would serve as a great example.

九州の列車 Kyushu Trains

由布院はこのごろ「人気温泉地トップ１００」の上位になっています。先日は亀清旅館が会員となっているジャパニーズ・イン・グループの研修会が湯布院で行われたので、せっかくの機会だったから由布院を視察してきました。

まずは長野から由布院までどう何行けば良いかとの問題。

前から松本空港からの飛行機に興味がありました。九州のお客さんに案内が出来るかなと。この機会で乗ってみました。

松本から出発する分にはうんと楽です。空港は高速道路から降りて数分と言う便利な所だし、駐車場は無料です。

福岡までは１時間５０分で、かなりスムーズです。

福岡空港はまた便利で、中心街まで地下鉄で行ける。

松本・福岡の飛行機は便利さで言えば抜群。料金は往復で４～５万円で妥当だと思ったら…

羽田・大分はＬＣＣで9800円だそうです。

Yufuin is an onsen resort town in Oita Prefecture on Kyushu Island. For the past several years it has consistently been ranked at the top of Japan's Top 100 Onsen Resorts list. The Japanese Inn Group of which Kamesei is a member recently held a conference in Yufuin, so I took advantage of the opportunity and went to see what was so special.

First issue -- how to get there from Nagano. Fuji Dream Airlines offers daily, 1-hour and 50 minute flights from Matsumoto to Fukuoka Airport. I had wanted to see the feasibility of enticing customers from Kyushu to come to Nagano using the flight, so I decided to try it myself.

Matsumoto Airport is very convenient -- just minutes off the freeway and connected to Matsumoto Station by a bus. The airport also offers free parking making it attractive to people from Nagano flying out.

And at the other end, Fukuoka Airport is perhaps even more convenient -- just an easy subway ride from the downtown area.

Overall, I thought the flight was a great option. And the cost, 40-50,000 yen round trip, seemed reasonable. But another conference attendee flew on a LCC from Haneda to Oita Airport for only 9800 yen. Hmmm. The Matsumoto-Fukuoka flight is convenient, but it may be a bit luxurious.

松本・福岡のＦＤＡ飛行機 FDA's Matsumoto-Fukuoka Flight

地獄谷野猿公苑のお猿は「スノーモンキー」と呼ばれていて、雪があった方が更に可愛く見える。この頃は雪が本格的に降ってきたようで、本格的なスノーモンキーになってきました。

バスの時刻表も冬版となりましたので戸倉上山田からの日帰りツアーとしてご参考して下さい。

The world-famous "Snow Monkeys" of the Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park are cute any time of the year soaking in their onsen bath. But it's when there is snow that they are truly in their most photogenic element. And that area has started to get their winter snow fall, so now is your chance!

Winter bus schedules are now in effect, so I updated the train and bus matrix to get you from our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada to the monkey park trailhead, Kanbayashi, and back for an easy day trip.

We just had a guest from Sydney, Australia make the trip. He said he 'only' took about 200 pictures of the monkeys. The snow made for a dramatic backdrop, especially on the walk from Kanbayashi through the beautiful evergreen forest.

千曲市雨の宮地区に美味しいパン屋・カフェ「ちゅら雲」があります。

ずっと前からはお店の事を聞いていたが、雨の宮に行く用事があって、その地元の方に場所を教えてもらって、初めて行きました。

外観があまり目立ったないし、場所は大きい通りとわけでもないから、ちゅら雲さんは「知っている人が知っている」って感じなお店。ベーグルやキッシュを買って、大変おいしかった。シェフのこだわりが伝わった。

カフェが付いているパン屋さんってなかなかいいなと思いました。今度は若女将とデートで行きたい♪

Over in Chikuma City's Ame-no-miya neighborhood is a small bakery / cafe called Churakumo. I had heard about it many years ago, but it wasn't until just now that I got to go myself.

Churakumo's location is what you could call "out of the way", and it's facade is a bit non-descript. So it's a place that "Those that know, know." But it's certainly worth searching out. I had the quiche and bagels, and I could definitely sense the care that went into making them.

Having a bakery with a cafe next to it is a great idea. Next time I'll have to take the wife there on a date!

ちゅら雲Churakumo

千曲市の稲荷山地区は明治時代からの土蔵がたくさん残っていて、ちょっとした蔵の街です。稲荷山のお好みやけキャフェ「しるきー」から下記のようなイベント情報が入りました：

On the northern tip of Chikuma City is the historical Inariyama neighborhoood. Dozens of classic earthen-walled storehouses line the narrow streets, giving a sense of what the area was like during its heydays as a transportation and distribution hub during the late Edo era. Tucked away in nooks and crannies of those storehouses are a wealth of antique pottery, furniture, cookingware and a myriad of other objects. Once a year, the storehouses are 'opened' and the antiques put up for sale. This year will be the 2nd annual such Inariyama Antiques Sale, to be held as per the following:

Antiques tend to be popular in the West, and it always amazes me there aren't more antique shops here in Japan, especially with all the skillfully crafted furniture and other objects here. So Inariyama's Antiques Sale is sure to be a great opportunity to pick up some classic Japanese artifacts!
