Have an Onsen with a Dog Tooth Violet

Miscellaneous

Dog Tooth Violet, currently in bloom in the garden of Kamesei Ryokan's outdoor family bath, 'Shinano-buro'. Cherry blossoms are nice, but I also love this more demure sign of spring.
One of the local shrines here in our onsen town 'Togura Kamiyamada' held a Katakuri Festival today in honor of a gathering of these violets growing in the wild. Here at Kamesei you can enjoy these festival-worthy flowers as you soak in our onsen.

Apricot blossoms in full bloom -- here at Kamesei Ryokan.  Our guest room "Chitose" has an apricot tree in its tsubo-niwa pocket garden -- perhaps the only such ryokan room in all of Japan!  Guests staying in this room can enjoy the blossoms all this week, and then guests staying here at the end of June / early July can enjoy picking fresh apricots.

The famous blossoms in nearby Mori, Japan's #1 Apricot Village, have just started blooming.  I drove there today and took this picture.  But the weather is warming up, so they should be in full bloom in just a matter of days.  Will keep you posted!

Tyler Receiving the Nagano Omotenashi Award from the Guv

On February 14th, Yours Truly, the proprietor here at Kamesei Ryokan, was preented a prize by the governor of Nagano Prefecture, Shuichi Abe-san, in recognition of my contribution to Nagano's hospitality ('omotenashi').

Personally, I feel my contributions have been limited in scope, limited to such things as:

For our guests here at Kamesei Ryokan, making an outdoor bath and baking cookies using my Mom's recipe,

For Onsen Town Togura-Kamiyamada, setting up rental bicycles and making a foreign language walking map / gourmet guide,

For Nagano Prefecture, making the Unique Nagano mobile app.

Little things like these start to add up, which I guess was what the judges considered in awarding me the top prize.

I still feel I am only in the early stages of learning "omotenashi", and look forward to contributing much more in the future!

Meeting Great ☆ Mucha

Miscellaneous

10 Tyler's Top 10 Ways to Enjoy Summer in Nagano

Miscellaneous

At the top of Mt. Yakedake

As summer vacation starts, Nagano Prefecture is gearing up for its biggest tourist season. However, a recent typhoon wiped out one of the bridges on the JR Chuo Line from Nagoya. Worried about a possible drop in the number of visitors, Nagano's Tourism Dept. contacted me to reassure everyone that train access from Tokyo and the Sea of Japan sides as well as all road access is perfectly normal. In addition, here are my suggestions for the best ways to enjoy Nagano's summer:

1. Mountain Climbing
Nagano is known as "The Roof of Japan" with all of its majestic mountains. And climbing them is the best way to appreciate their massive scale. Just be sure to treat the mountains with respect, and prepare accordingly for changes in weather, etc. Too of the mountains I recently climbed are
*Mt. Yakedake from Kamikochi
*Mt. Asama from Tengu Onsen / Asama Sansou.

2. Ride a Ropeway to Alpine Heaven
An easier way to experience Nagano's 2000-meter plus high alpine world is to ride one of the many ropeways, ski lifts, or other forms of transport operating in the summer. A few suggestions:
*Komadake Ropeway from Komagane to the Senjoki Cirque
*Happoone ski lift to Happo Pond
*Kurobe Dam Alpine Route

3. Play in a River
Japan's summer is hot! One great way to cool off is to jump in a river fed by refreshingly cold snow melt. Most rivers are thought of as being too dangerous to play in, but here in Nagano there are lots of options. A couple examples are:
*"Mizu to Midori Outdoor Experience Pavilion" in Komagane
*Togakushi Campground (Sakasa River)

4. Camping
Being an innkeeper, I should try to promote staying at ryokans. However, I personally love camping and Nagano has too many great camping spots to ignore. Here a some our family likes the most:
*Korakuen Campground on the shores of Lake Nojiri
*Togakushi Campground at the base of Mt. Togakushi and within a short walk to the famed cedar trees lining the path to Togakushi's Inner Shrine.

5. Scenic Drives
If you have a car, Nagano has some famous scenic drives such as Utsukushi-ga-hara's Venus Line and the Vocano Route between Mt. Asama and Shiga Kogen / Mt. Shirane. There are also an innumerable amount of windy countryside roads to be enjoyed. One is the road from Omi IC on the Nagano Expwy to see the Dosojin roadside gods.

6. Onsen Hopping
Nagano has the most day-use onsens of any prefecture in Japan. From onsens featuring expansive views to ones hidden away in a remote mountain location, and from onsen waters that are a sulphery milky white to some that are a deep shade of orange-red from the iron content, Nagano has the most amazing variety of onsens. My personal favorite is:
*Kiriake Onsen in the Akiyama district behind Shiga Kogen in northeastern Nagano. The mineral water bubbles up naturally in a river bed where you move rocks around to make your own bath.

7. Fresh Juicy Fruits and Crispy Vegetables
Summer in Nagano starts with the apricot season then transitions to plums, peaches and blueberries before shifting to grapes and summer apples. Kawakami Village and the Sugadaira plateau help make Nagano Japan's largest source of summer lettuce. You'll never find fresher, crispier summer vegetables or juicier fruit anywhere!

8. Firework Displays
Suwa Lake's massive annual fireworks display takes place every year on August 15th. It headlines a series of pyrotechnic demonstrations held all summer long throughout the prefecture. Here in onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada where I live, ours is held on August 7th above the Chikuma River.

9. Festivals!
Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's Summer Festival is, of course, the best in the world (Sorry -- I'm a bit biased), but every community in the prefecture celebrates one (or more!) festival throughout the summer. Just a couple examples are the Bon-Odori dance at Zenkoji (August 13-15th) and the Tanabata Festival at Ueda City's Unnomachi district around August 7th.

10. Going for a stroll wearing a Yukata robe
This is actually my top recommendation on how to enjoy Nagano's summer. Shibu Onsen, Bessho Onsen and other hot spring resort towns are perfect for taking a walk while wearing a yukata robe. Most ryokans provide wooden geta to wear on your feat making the iconic clip-clop sound (in Japanese, "kara-koro"). Here in Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen, there is a foot bath and even "shateki" cork gun target shooting parlors to enjoy as you explore the town in your yukata and geta.

Come and enjoy Nagano Prefecture this summer!

Train Service around Tsumago disrupted

Miscellaneous

As I posted on the Go-Nagano website, last week's typhoon wiped out the JR Chuo Line around Tsumago. For anyone coming by train from Nagoya and/or visiting the enchanting post town of Tsumago, please take note:

A section of JR’s Chuo Line between Shiojiri/Matsumoto and Nagoya near the border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures got washed out by a landslide on 09-July caused by Typhoon Neoguri. Specifically, the track between Nojiri 野尻 and Sakashita (坂下) stations got washed away, affecting train service to a total of 5 stations including Nagiso, gateway to the popular post town of Tsumago.

JR Central Japan released a statement saying the JR Ltd. Express “Wide View Shinano” service will be suspended until further notice while the tracks are repaired. Regular train service will be offered between Shiojiri and Sakashita on the Nagano side, and from Nojiri on to Nagoya on the Gifu side. JR will operate busses between Sakashita and Nojiri, including Nagiso.

Car travel is unaffected as Route 19 (the major highway in the Kiso Valley) and all other major routes in Nagano Prefecture are open as normal. For train travel between Matsumoto and/or Nagano City to Nagoya, going via Tokyo may be your fastest option (either using the Nagano Shinkansen from Nagano Station or JR Ltd. Express “Azusa” from Matsumoto). Highway busses also are running. As soon as Nagano Prefecture’s Tourism Dept. provides an update on the JR Chuo Line, I will revise this post.

Current train / bus schedule at http://jr-central.co.jp/news/release/_pdf/000023026.pdf. Schedule is in Japanese. Main stations as follows:

松本 Matsumoto

Shiojiri

Narai (Gateway to the post town of Narai-juku)

Kiso Fukushima

Sakashita

Nagiso

Nojiri

Nakatsugawa (Gateway to Magome post town) *Change here for trains on to Nagoya.

Greeting Rokumon's Inagural Run

Miscellaneous

Shinano Railway's new Event Train "Rokumon" started service on July 11th. Our local taiko and dance troupes performed for the inagural run. I helped out with passing out brochures and waving at the guests. It was a lively kick-off!

On the 12th, I went again to distribute brochures. Our daughter Misaki came along. We took a peek inside the train, and were delighted to see Rokumon has a play area for kids!

Bluebells from Kamiyamada to the World

Miscellaneous

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we have recently been decorating our lobby with some bluebells (grandiflorum).

Kamiyamada's Chikaraishi neighborhood is a leading grower of bluebells. One of the growers has a child in the same class as one of our kids. They kindly gave us these beautiful flowers to display in our lobby.

We had some guests from China stay with us tonight. They were pleasantly surprised to see the bluebells in our inn's entrance. We hadn't realized it, but there was a flower show in Chikaraishi, and these buyers came from overseas to see the latest seed varieties.

Approx. 30 years ago, Chikaraishi's grower N-san developed the first purple-colored bluebell, which put that little neighborhood on the world flower map.

The buyers from China were impressed to see we had some descendents of that legendary first purple flower decorating our lobby -- a global connection thanks to Chikaraishi!
