The "Face" of our Recent PR

Miscellaneous

The other day, I asked one of my mentors here, an innkeeper from another ryokan, for some advice about a media inquiry. Nation-wide travel magazine Ryoko Yomiuri had called about featuring me in a column of their magazine. I was concerned that I was becoming too much of Kamesei Ryokan's "face" when I want the focus to be on our inn's warm wood construction, the baths, the gardens, our chef's cooking, etc. The other innkeeper told me bluntly that Kamesei's buildings, gardens and cooking aren't strong enough to be selling points -- all Kamesei has IS Tyler's face.

Ouch! Are our facilities really that bad? I for one believe are classic style, with the 'watari-roka' passageway taking you back to the detached guest rooms, with tsubo-niwa pocket gardens throughout, is Kamesei's strong point. A lot of polishing work still has to be done, but if done well, it will make for an strongly attractive inn. I want Kamesei to bigger than just me, the American innkeeper. His words are encouraging me to work harder to polish up our facitlities to put the recognition on the inn instead of me.

Anyways, the Ryoko Yomiuri magazine article about me will come out in their September 2nd issue. Some other recent media coverage about Kamesei have been a little more to my liking. Last night, local television station ABN showed a program featuring two "talents", Bobby and Thane, traveling around Niigata and Nagano. They featured our inn on the show -- not just me but the home-made cookies we serve with the tea and the hand-made outdoor bath, as well as our chef's meal.

And tomorrow, a culture / lifestyle magazine called "Carrel" from neighboring Niigata Prefecture will come to interview us and take pictures of our inn. While there will likely be some mention of me in the article, the focus is on traditional Japanese-style ryokans. That magazine will come out on September 20th.

So more and more, Kamesei's traditional building and the gardens are attracting more recognition -- this is a step in the right direction!

Obasute Station's Cleanliness is Thanks to O-san

Miscellaneous

Obasute's Hero

Nearby Obasute Station is getting a lot of attention. It is known as one of Japan's Top 3 Views from the Train Window, Nikkei Newspaper's #2 "Station We Want to See", and the same Nikkei Newspaper's #1 Moon-Viewing Spot.

Is that all just by dumb luck?

Or is there more to it than that?

If you look closely at the station, you'll notice:
*There is a new hand-carved sign above the entrance,
*There is a painting by local artist Mori Bakuro on the platform side of the station building,
*The platform's garden is well-taken care of,
*There is a haiku post box on the platform,
*The vending machine out front isn't a glaring red color, but is painted white to match the building,
*Inside the building are some classic pictures as well as explanations of local legends,
*etc., etc.,
*And, despite being an un-manned station, the bathroom is always clean and the spiderwebs are always swept away.

There are basically 2 types of people that do "civic improvement":
1. Those that have meetings for the sake of meetings and talk, talk, talk (like me?)
2. Those that start with the things they can do on a daily basis.

JR's O-san is of the 2nd type. He comes on his own time as a volunteer to work on the station. He's going to be upset that I'm posting his picture in public, but I think it's important that the public know that Obasute's popularity isn't just dumb luck. And that everyone can make a similar difference in their own town.

Civic improvement meetings are important, but cleaning toilets and wiping away spiderwebs is too.

Miscellaneous

Rainy Obasute Night View

Miscellaneous

Some out-of-prefecture guests that had come and stay with us were looking forward to going to see the night view from Obasute Station. However, as evening came around, it started to rain. Heavy. Cats and Dogs heavy. We waited a while, and the rain let up a bit, so we piled in the car and proceeded with our Obasute Night View / Legends tour.
I had been there the night before with some other guests, and we managed to time it for right after the rain stopped. So the air was nice and clean, and the view of the lights of the Zenkoji Plain was extra spectacular. By comparison, tonight a light mist remained and not much of the Plain was visible. However, the guests were delighted nonetheless.
By coincidence, today, the Nagano Prefecture Tourism Bureau held a conference on creating "Chakuchi-gata Ryoko Shohin" which loosely translated means Tourism Products ('Ryoko Shohin') designed to be enjoyed after arrival ('Chakuchi'). 60 people from the tourism industry gathered to discuss and study such Products. Our town's official (='for fee') Obasute Night View tour was featured. Areas that rely on tourism definitely need to put in the effort to develop such tours.
I just wish there'd be a funner name than Destination Tourism Products...

Honeymoon Memories from Obasute

Miscellaneous

Don't these two look like they're in love? Of course they do -- Tatiana and Robert are on their honeymoon. They came from Italy to Japan for their vacation after their wedding.

The building in the background is Choraku-Ji Temple in Obasute. The thatched roof was just re-done last year. It makes for a romantic backdrop.

That night, I took the two on the Obasute Night View / Legends tour. I always show the guests the "haiku post", but hardly anyone every writes a poem. Tonight, though, Tatiana asked for a pen, and wrote a haiku -- in Italian! It was something like "The moonlight glowing, lights of the town glittering, and my ring shining." Ahh, how romantic!

Big Step in Finishing the Cedar Bath

Miscellaneous

New cover for the pipes

Our newest outdoor bath, the yellow cedar one outside the ladies bath, was unofficially opened last year on Christmas Day. I've just recently been able to make time to work on finishing the surround. Last week I finished the bamboo screen around the bath, yesterday I worked on attaching the "kawara" tiles on top of the fence, and today I finished the cover for the ugly pipes.
I am surprised guests haven't complained about those pipes at all. I guess the bath feels so good, people have overlooked the pipes and the many other shortcomings around the bath.
Next up is to finish around the siphon pipe, and to touch up the painting.

What Role Will Obasute Station Play in JR's Upcoming Nagano DC?

Miscellaneous

Obasute Station House -- Notice the Turtle-like shapes surrounding the windows.

In fall of 2010, JR Group will feature Nagano Prefecture in a Destination Campaign. The theme will be "Walking". Here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, we are already working on preparing Eco / Fitness activities to promote during the DC. (Yours truly is the top coordinator.)
Chikuma City's sole JR station is Obasute on the Shinonoi Line. Today I went there to explore the possibilities for the upcoming DC. JR has already replaced the platform signs, and is apparently planning on special event trains for the DC.
Obasute Station is set up in "Switchback" style, making it popular with railroad fans. It also has a great view of the Obasute terraced rice fields as well as the Zenkoji Plain whose lights are beautiful at night, making the station popular with fans of natural scenery as well as night views. In addition, the area is connected with the "Ta-goto-no-tsuki" (moon reflecting in the individual rice paddies) and "Obasute-yama" legends, making it popular with history as well as haiku fans.
How can we make the most of Obasute Station with all of its fascinating aspects, for the upcoming Destination Campaign?

What is Showa Retro?

Miscellaneous

When local TV station ABN featured Togura Kamiyamada Onsen last month on their Saturday morning variety show, they had talked about our town's "Showa Retro" feel.

What exactly is "Showa Retro"? Is it a classic style that brings back warm memories of the 60's and 70's -- all the garish neon of the bar district and the familiar appearance of the inns built in the era?
Or does it refer to a dismal impression that no improvements have been made since the 60's and 70's -- stemming from all the dilapidated buildings from the period?

As part of the the TV show, local celebrity Sanshiro-san came and took pictures of our onsen town's "Showa Retro" scenes. Their pictures are on display at a temporary gallery set up in an empty store front across the street from Arita-ya Ryokan on Kamiyamada Onsen's main street. The gallery will be open from 9am to 5pm through the month of June.

Seeing our onsen town through Sanshiro's eyes makes one realize that "Showa Retro" is a mix of memories and dilapidation. For people who didn't grow up during that era, you look at some of the architecture and ponder what were they thinking when they built that? But there are many people who saw those buildings during the Showa heydays, and for whom those styles have great appeal.

Come and check out Sanshiro's pictures in the gallery, then go for walk around Togura Kamiyamada and see the Showa Retro scenes yourself!

New Style Bamboo Fence

Miscellaneous

Now that we're into our quiet season, I've been able to get caught up on some projects, like the screen around the new cedar outdoor bath. Using some bamboo I got from a friend, and a cool new bamboo splitter I bought, and borrowing an idea from a local soba shop's garden, I made this section of fence using a bamboo weave.
Using the bamboo splitter was cool -- it was so easy to take even a long, fat length of bamboo and split it into 5 even widths. And then weaving the bamboo was fun to do, too. All of these were first-time experiences for me. I'm looking forward to making the rest of the screen next week.

Our outdoor bath's garden is coming into fine form

Miscellaneous

Our showy rhodie

This is the 2nd spring for our "100 Year Bath" outdoor bath's garden. The various plants are leafing out beautifully as they have become accustomed to their places in the garden. The rhodendron at the base of the 'yagura' tower is particularly splendid right now. Last year, it only sprouted a few blossoms. This year it is covered in pretty white flowers. It is one of the many plants that can be enjoyed while bathing in our outdoor bath.
