ＪＡＬの機内雑誌「Ｓｋｙｗａｒｄ」の７月号は「ごはんのおかず：長野のまぁーず」と言う記事で長野県旅館組合青年部の発展しているまぁーずが紹介されています。

長野県は日本の中でも長寿県と言われている。その秘密は恐らく発酵食品からである：信州味噌、野沢菜が代表漬物、地酒など。まぁーずはその３つの組み合わせ：お味噌と漬物と酒粕。トリプル長寿！

戸倉上山田温泉の中でまぁーずを積極的に取り組んでいる宿は今回のＪＡＬの記事で紹介されています。その１つは我がけ目清旅館のＣｈｅｆ武井のまぁーず信州サーモンの一品。

今回は長野のまぁーずがＪＡＬの機内雑誌に載りました。今度は機内食になったらもっとすごいよね。

Japan Airlines' in-flight magazine "Skyward" has an article on Mahz, the new seasoning that the Nagano Ryokan Junior Association is developing.

Japan as a whole has a long average life expectancy. Within Japan, Nagano Prefecture's life expectancy average is especially long. Research into the reason points to a high presence of fermented foods in the diet of people living in Nagano. For example, miso, pickled vegetables and sake.

The Ryokan Junior Assoc. has taken those 3 -- miso, 'tsukemono' pickled vegetables, and sake lees -- and combined them into a unique seasoning dubbed 'Mahz'. JAL's magazine featured this Mahz in their series highlighting different regional cuisine in Japan. 3 inns here in our onsen town were mentioned in the article. Kamesei Ryokan's Chef Takei and his Shinshu (Nagano) Salmon Mahz was one of the dishes to be featured.

Maybe someday Mahz will not only be in JAL's inflight magazine, but in their inflight menu, too!

4月に出来た戸倉上山田温泉の散歩地図・グルメガイドの中国語版は観光経済新聞（6月16日号）に取り上がれました。私が以前に作った英語版は千曲市の補助金とホテル園山荘の中国人スタッフの翻訳のお蔭で中国語（簡体字）バージョンが出来ました。観光経済新聞がその努力を応援して頂いて、記事で紹介してくれました。他の観光地にも参考になれば良いと思うし、戸倉上山田温泉は海外のお客様が大歓迎と言うイメージにもなれば良いと思っております。

中国人観光客はこれから増えるでしょうけど、取り敢えずはシンガポールや香港のお客様もこの中国版を喜んで頂いております。実際に躍が出来、嬉しいです。

The Chinese language version of the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen Walking Map / Gourmet Guide that I helped produce last April was featured in the June 16th issue of the Kanko Keizai Shimbun (Tourism Economics Newspaper). I put together the original English language version and then using a grant from Chikuma City and the translating skills of a Chinese staffmember from Hotel Marusansou, we were able to get the Chinese language vesion published.

I was delighted that one of the trade newspapers ran an article about the map. Hopefully other onsen areas will find this example useful, and I also hope Togura Kamiyamada's image as a friendly destination for foreigners will benefit, too. As visitors from China are slowly increasing, I am finding this map to be useful for our guests from Singapore and Hong Kong, too.

This particular campaign is a result of the ryokan association of our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada making a PR 'caravan' tour of Nagoya this past March. I along with other innkeepers drove to Nagoya and tried to spread the word about our onsen. It's great to see our efforts are paying off.

シティリビング Cityliving

先日は長野青年会議所に頼まれて、パネルディスカッションのパネリストになりました。

テーマは「ここが変だよ！日本人ｉｎ長野」で、お相撲で有名な小錦さんもパネリスト、懇親会のアトラクションがプロダンスチーム「遠藤時代」。

正直って、小錦さんに会いたいと思いながらそのテーマは苦手（アメリカは変な所がなければ良いかもしれないけど、その以前の問題…）だし、ダンスパフォーマンスどこまでプロかとの不安がありました。しかし、以前は松本と千曲市の青年会議所で講演を頼まれた事があるし、長野JCのOBの土屋社長とNInJAプロジェクトで仲良いし、参加させて頂きました。

私の方からの「変」は何で文化財をもっと大事にしないかと。特に建築物。五輪前までの長野駅舎は善光寺に似ていて、愛された建物でした。新幹線の工事でそれが壊されて、今のどこの町の駅舎か分からない作り。勿体ない！千曲市の稲荷山地区の土蔵が年々に少なくなっている。以前は市長に陳情した事がある:民間だけじゃ整備が出来ない;補助金を出しなさいと。

他のパネリストのお蔭で長野だけの問題じゃないとの事が分かりました。中国からの留学生によると北京の「胡同」が同じように壊されている。なるほど。

The Nagano JC's invited me to be a panelist at their International Night. The discussion's theme was to be "What's weird about Japan". Konishiki, the sumo star from Hawaii, was another panelist, and the banquet's main entertainment was to be a pro dance troupe called Endo Jidai.

To be honest, I usually try to not focus on what is weird about Japan, especially as my home, America, has so many weird issues to deal with. And although I'd always wanted to meet Konishiki, I had my doubts about how good the dance performance would be. But I've given speaches in the past for the Matsumoto and Chikuma City JC's and work closely with Tsuchiya-san (past president of the Nagano chapter), so felt obligated to participate.

My deal for the "Weird" discussion was about how historical buildings aren't preserved here. Nagano Station used to have a classic station house patterned after Zenkoji Temple. That was all demolished when the shinkansen bullet train came. Here in Chikuma City, our Inariyama district's earthen-walled storehouses are slowly being torned down. I've petitioned the mayor before to subsidize the preservation effort.

One of the other panelists, an exchange student from China, helped put it into perspective, though. Beijing's famous hutongs are fast being bulldozed into oblivion. So it's not just Japan.

小錦さんと少しお話ししたけど、緊張した！何を話せばいいか、困った。とにかく、お相撲は避けた方が良いそうです。「３歳から歌い続いている;２０アルバムを出した」と言う。お相撲がサイドの仕事だったようです。なるほど。

I did get to talk a bit with Konishiki. I was rather nervous though -- what to talk about? Apparently not sumo. "I've been singing since 3 years old, and have put out 20 albums." Once again, perspective.

そして、懇親会。沢山の良い出会いも出来たし、心配していたダンスチーム遠藤時代は素晴らしかった。観光、感動！

And the banquet: I got to meet so many fascinating people, and the dance show -- Endo Jidai are fascinating!

FM長野はまたこの年度、「千曲市浪漫紀行　スイッチバック姨捨」という番組を毎週木曜日12:00-12:49にOn Airします。

今度の5月24日の番組のテーマはサイクリングです。そして、戸倉上山田温泉のレンタサイクルの担当でいる私がゲストになる予定です。その下見の為に、リポーター池田さんとディレクター藤原さんと温泉街を自転車で回りました。

コースは去年に千曲サイクリングクラブと一緒に作った千曲市のサイクリングマップで紹介されている温泉街のコースでした。カラコロ足湯から出発して、途中で寄ったのは：

内の5歳の美咲ちゃんも一緒にサイクリングした。あちらこちらよりながら、2時間かかりました。ちょうどいいコース。ほとんど坂がないし、山辺と川辺の風が気持ちいいし。

当日の番組はどうなるか、楽しみだね。

FM Nagano is once again producing a once-a-week program on Chikuma City every Thursday during the lunch hour. The themd for this upcoming program, Thursday May 24th, is cycling. The special guest will be the guy behind the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen rental cycles -- Me!

Reporter Ikeda-san and Director Fujiwara-san rode with me around the course for a test run. We followed the Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen course featured in the new Chikuma City Hiking / Cycling Map that I made with the assistance of the Chikuma Cycling Club last year.

I don't know how things will turn out for this Thursday's program, but I'm looking forward to it!

FM長野「千曲市浪漫紀行すいっちばっくおばすて」FM Nagano's Chikuma City Program

KURAという雑誌は「信州を愛する大人の情報誌」というテーマです。長野県の生活、歴史、グルメ、景色、街並み等を紹介する雑誌。２０１２年４月号（３月２０日発売；カバーストーリ「城下町の桜とスイーツ」）に亀清旅館の新しく出来た貸切露天風呂「しなの風呂」が載っています。

「手仕事の信州」、「信州の酒文化」、「実りの信州」、「温泉王国信州へ」などの特集でKURAが長野県の良い所ばかり紹介している。信州を代表する雑誌である。

亀清旅館の宿つくりの中で、「いつかKURAに載れたらいいな」というのが私の夢でした。１２月に完成した「しなの風呂」のお蔭でその夢は実現が出来ました。

KURA magazine bills itself as the "Source of Information for People that Love Nagano Prefecture". Its feature stories cover Nagano lifestyle, history, gourmet, scenery, townscapes and more. The April 2012 issue (on sale March 20th, Cover Story: "Castle Town Cherry Blossoms and Pastries") has a blurb on Kamesei Ryokan's new "Shinano-buro" family bath.

With feature articles like "Nagano's Sake Culture", "Nagano Fruits", "Onsen Paradise, Nagano", etc., KURA is the most definitive magazine about Nagano Prefecture.

Ever since I started making improvements here at Kamesei Ryokan, it has been my dream to one day have our inn be featured in KURA magazine. Thanks to our new Shinano Bath, my dream has been realized!

長野県の観光振興課が3年ぐらい前から「エコ泊」との企画を実施しています。

亀清旅館はロビーに薪ストーブを設置して、周辺のりんご農園から頂いた剪定物を薪として使っているように「エコ」を応援しております。

その薪ストーブが観光振興課に取り上がれて、新しく作った「信州エコ”泊”覧会」のチラシに載せてくれました。

薪ストーブの上に節水、節電、など等更に環境に優しい宿つくりを進んでいますので、これからも宜しくお願い致します。

Nagano Prefecture's Tourism Development Office is promoting environmentally friendly tourism through its "Eco-Stay" program.

In their new brochure, they featured Kamesei Ryokan's lobby wood burning stove. We use trimmings from local apple orchards for the firewood, so our main source of heat for the lobby has a minimal carbon imprint.

Besides the stove, we also have taken step to conserve our electricity and water usage, all in an effort to make Kamesei Ryokan as environmentally sound as possible.

信州エコ泊 Nagano's Eco-Friendly Tourism

「KURA」という雑誌を作っているカントリープレスの新しい「信州ご当地B級グルメ手帳」の中でこの戸倉上山田温泉の伝説の大黒や食堂「ニンタレかつ」が紹介されました。写真撮影の為に当温泉の旅館青年部長（＝私）が呼ばれました。

という訳で、この雑誌を開いてニンタレかつを美味しく頂いている私の顔を見れば、驚かないで下さい。

いつかはKURAの雑誌の方で亀清旅館の取材を望んでいますが、取り敢えずは大黒屋のPRです。カントリープレスさん、有難うございました。そして、大黒屋の夏目さん、大変おいしく頂きました。ただし、やはり、食べてからは嫁はんと二日間ぐらいチュできませんでした。あのにんにくは効きます！

Country Press, the producers of Nagano's premier "KURA" magazine, recently put out a gourmet guide to Nagano's local food specialty restaurants. One of the shops featured was Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's own Daikokuya with its legendary garlic sauce tonkatsu, "Nintare Katsu".

For the picture shoot, they had our onsen's ryokan junior association leader pose for the photographs.

In other words, me!

So if you pick up a copy of the magazine and see a picture of me drooling over the nintare katsu, don't be surprised.

One of these days I'm hoping KURA does a feature on our inn, Kamesei Ryokan. But for now I am thrilled to be able to help promote Daikokuya. Country Press, thanks for the photos. And Natsume-san, thanks for the yummy katsudon. I do have to admit, though, that I wasn't able to kiss my wife for 2 straight days -- that garlic sauce is potent!

長野市タウン誌「プースカフェ―」の2月号は上山田温泉の特集です。温泉街の色々な写真の中で亀清旅館の玄関にある看板も写っていました。

2年前にお客さんに駐車場の位置を案内する為に私がこの看板を作りました。ついでに遊び心で善光寺や松本城、カラコロ足湯等色んな行先（シアトルも！）のミニ看板も作りました。この看板が雑誌のカメラマンの目を引いて、嬉しい！

こうやって戸倉上山田温泉ををさらに賑やかにするのに一生懸命です。また一つな目玉が出来て、良かった！

この代わった看板が亀清の玄関にありますので、良かったら見に来てください。

One of Nagano City's free magazines, "Pousse Cafe" features Kamiyamada Onsen for their February issue. Among their photo collage is a picture of Kamesei's funky guide post.

I built this sign 2 years ago, initially to point out our carpark location to guests. Rather than stopping there, I added mini-signs for Matsumoto Castle, our local footbath, etc., etc. (even Seattle!). I'm glad this caught the eye of the magazine's photographer.

This sign is just one of my efforts to help enliven our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. I'm glad it's having a positive effect.
