見る方は「入りたい」と言う気持ちになるのかな?

ちょっと渋いと言うか、暗い様な気がしますが、皆さんはどう思いますか?

亀清旅館の中庭の秋の写真です。この庭は四季の変更を一番よく表現するのではないかと思います。亀清旅館のＨＰを見る皆様の「今」の天気や季節の様子を見せる為に、ライブカメラを設置したいと考えています。

自己満足かな?

お客様へのおもてなしかな?

どう思いますか?

Pictured is Kamesei Ryokan's naka-niwa garden and koi pond. I feel this garden best expresses the change of the seasons here at our inn. To give visitors to our website a real-time feel of the weather and season, I am thinking of setting up a live camera feed of the garden onto our website.

Would that be vanity, or a useful tool for guests?

17日の稲荷山蔵開き市に次男を連れて、行ってみました。稲荷山の昔からの土蔵からこういう宝物が出てくるか、期待していました。

予想通りでした。

この面白い道具があった。品物の重量を量る「はかり」。昔は商人は歩いて回って、品物の量り売りの場合はこういうはかりを使っていた。

はかりはキログラムではなく、貫だそうです。
１貫＝3.75kgだそうです。尺貫法は明治から１９５９までメートル法と同時に利用されたようで、それ以降は少なくなって、１９６６に完全にメートル法に変わったそうです。

５００円で歴史をゲットしました。

ただ、どこで飾るか、困っています。とりあえず、亀清旅館のお風呂の入り口にプッチ資料館がございますので、そこで展示する様にしています。

背景に写っている和傘も稲荷山蔵開き市で購入しました。亀清の貸切風呂へ行く入口に置く様にしました。雨の日に貸切風呂へ歩くお客様が使える様に。これも５００円！

もうすでに来年の蔵開き市を楽しみにしています。

On the 17th, I dragged our #2 son to Inariyama for the antiques sale. I was looking forward to seeing what kind of treasures would come out of the nooks and crannies of Inariyama's old storehouses, and I wasn't disappointed.

Pictured are a couple of the items I picked up. Any guess what that item with the hook is? It's a portable scale. Traveling salesmen used to sell some objects by weight and used this kind of scale to measure, not kilograms, but "kan". (1 kan = 3.75kg). Apparently 'kan' were used along side kilograms from the Meiji era until 1959 until being phased out and totally replaced by the metric system in 1966.

A bit of history for only 500 yen!

And the Japanese umbrella in the background was also 500 yen. I put it at the entrance to the path to Kamesei's family bath, for guests to use in the rain.

After discovering these great treasures, I am already looking forward to next year's antiques sale at Inariyama!

亀清旅館のそれぞれの客室のベランダのコーヒーテーブルに新しい物は最近にデビューしました。

どういう事かと言うと、この戸倉上山田の業者さんの特産品を紹介する通販カタログは以前から作っていて
(制作は戸倉上山田カラコロにぎわい協議会；提案者は私）
第三バージョンまで続いてきました。効果を測ったら少しはあったがもっと良い方法があるのかなと言う疑問・不安がありました。生産者の皆さんと私達旅館の代表が話し合って、いろいろやってみた結果は：

ラミネート作戦！

裸でテーブルに置いてあることによって、お客様は自然に手に入り、見て頂くと。

地元のぶどうとりんご農家(クラウン農園）
温泉のまんじゅ屋さん(笹鈴）
温泉のステインドグラス工房（アーツプロデュース）
地元のおやき名人の持ち帰りおやき
隣の坂城町の鼠大根商品

既に葡萄・りんごとまんじゅの注文がこのラミネート作戦のお蔭で入りました。

この新しい取り組みの努力の結果は楽しみだ！

今年の客室改造工事で、
壁は「私はペンキを塗りたい」と大工さん達に言いました。
しかし、大工さんは「ダメです。日本の旅館はペンキが合わない。だが、しっくいを塗るので良かったら一緒に？」と逆に誘ってくれました。

誰がボスかな？と思いました。

まあ、大工さんに従って、生まれてから初めてしっくいの内装をしました。

特徴な道具に特徴なテクニークで、最初は大変でした。その内に少し慣れて来たけど、プロの大工さんにかなわない。

今回の工事は「紅玉（りんご）」というテーマの客間「末広」と「杏」のテーマの客間「千歳」でした。せっかくだったから、大工さんと相談して、想像して、それぞれの木の葉っぱをしっくいに押して、葉っぱの形を残しました。

When we remodelled two of our guestrooms here at Kamesei Ryokan this year, I told the carpenters that I wanted to paint the new walls.

They told me, "No, for a traditional Japanese ryokan, paint won't work 'cuz it's too Western. But we will use 'shikkui' (plaster) and if you want, you can help."

Hey, just who is the boss around here?

Oh well, I deferred to the carpenters and had them show me the special 'shikkui' techniques and how to use the specialized spades and other tools.

It took some getting used to, but I soon got the hang of 'shikkui'-ing. Of course the carpenters were much more proficient than I. As we worked, the carpenters and I talked all about the finer points of 'shikkui', and we stumbled upon a great idea. The two rooms we remodelled have tree-based themes: Suehiro's is the Kogyoku apple tree and Chitose's is the apricot tree. We took leaves from the respective trees and pressed them into the wet shikkui.

今回の改造工事で、一つな和洋室が出来ました。

客間「千歳」にベッドルームが付きました。

明確に言えば、「ベッド台のある部屋」です。畳のベッド台にお布団を引くような形です。「和」がしっかり取り組まれている洋室。

これで床で寝るのはつらいな方が高台で眠れるようになりました。

足の弱いご年配の方は床から上ったりするのはつらい方、
お布団に慣れていないベッド好きな若い方、
どうしても床で寝るのに馴染めない外国の方、
様々なお客様のニーズに合わせて、作らせて頂きました。

ベッドのご要望があれば、是非に予約の時に仰って下さい。この新しく出来た和洋室を喜んで提供いたします。

With our recent remodelling here at Kamesei Ryokan, we created a guestroom with a bedroom. Our regular 10-tatami mat size "Chitose" room now has a Western-styled bedroom attached.

To be precise, the bedroom has a raised platform covered in tatami where we lay out futons for our guests to sleep. So it is a very Japanese "Western bedroom".

Now a wide range of guests can enjoy sleeping on a raised bed:
Elderly with weak legs that have trouble getting up off the floor,
Younger people used to sleeping on beds and not on the tatami,
Guests from overseas who can't get used to sleeping on the ground,
etc.

For anyone who wishes to have a bedroom, feel free to make your request at the time of booking and we will gladly provide Chitose with its new bedroom!

亀清旅館は毎年、少しずつ改造工事を進んでいます。
2年前は客間「松風」の狭いトイレと使っていなかったシャワースペースをリフォームして、シークな木を活かしたインテリアーで広いトイレと洗面台を作り、
前年度は客間「弥生」に広いトイレに軽井沢の別荘のイメージしたデザイナー洗面台を作り、
今年は「千歳」と「末広」の二室を改造した。

両方共はベランダの片側にトイレ、もう片側に洗面台と使っていなかったシャワー室。トイレを使ってから手を洗うのに不便だし、衛生的ではなかった。シャワー室のデッドスペースも気になっていたし。

今回の工事で洗面台をトイレ側に移って、
元の洗面台とシャワー室の間の壁を取っ払って、
ベッドルームを作りました。
従って、「千歳」は和洋室になりました。

取り敢えず、新しいトイレと洗面台の写真。

我が宿は通常の10畳・トイレ付の客室が12室です。この工事のお蔭でその内の6室は洗浄トイレ付になりました。なお、その一つはベッドルーム付きの和洋室となりました。

亀清旅館は昔ながらの良い所をしっかり守りながら、弱い所を段々と改造して、更に良い宿になってきています。まだまだ直す所が沢山ありますが、少しずつ進化してまいります。

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we are continuing to make improvements on our inn bit-by-bit.
Two years ago, we remodelled our guestroom "Matsukaze", turning it's cramped toilet and un-used shower room into a stylish toilet and sink area with a sheik, dark wood interior design.
Last fiscal year, it was "Yayoi"'s turn. Gone is the tiny toilet, and here to stay is a bright, roomy toilet and designer sink area patterned after a Karuizawa summer home.

This year, we re-made two rooms, "Chitose" and "Suehiro". They both had a toilet on one side of the sitting area, and the sink area with an un-used shower space on the other. After you used the toilet, you had to walk across the sitting area to wash your hands -- not very hygenic.

With this remodel, we moved the sink space next to the toilet. Then we removed the walls separating the sink and shower areas. That opened up enough space to create a bedroom.

We have a total of 12 guestrooms that are 10-tatami mat size with private toilets. Now with this construction, half of them now have been updated with toilets equipped with washlet functions.

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we still have many, many improvements to make. But we are gradually making progress, all the while honoring the historical parts of our inn. We sincerely hope for all of your continued support.

この間にお客さんに怒られました：
「生ビールがない？！普通なら旅館は生ビールがあるよ！」と。
まあ、大きい宿はそうかもしれませんが、亀清旅館の様な小さい宿は樽を開けたら賞味期限まで使い切れる訳ないです。

その代わりじゃないですが、私達亀清旅館で実は、地ビールに拘りがございます。北信の代表の地ビール、志賀高原「玉村本店」から3種類を扱っております：

ペールエール　←フルーティー系
IPA　←苦い系
ポーター　←黒ビール

亀清旅館のお客様は大半喜んで頂いて御礼ます。この厚い夏は特に、地ビールが合うようで、恐らく通常のアサヒより売れている。問屋さんと話したら、「亀清旅館は地ビールの動きがすごい！」と言ってくれました。それこそ、恐らく戸倉上山田温泉では地ビール一番かもしれない。

生ビールのご希望の方には申し訳ございませんが、おいておりません。是非、地ビールの方を試してみてください。

Recently, we had a complaint from one of our guests:
"What do you mean no draft beer? All ryokans serve beer on tap!"
Well, perhaps large-scale ryokans do. But for small inns like Kamesei Ryokan, there is no way we could use up an entire keg after opening before the beer goes flat.

Not to take the place of draft beer, but we here at Kamesei Ryokan pride ourselves in offering craft beer to our guests. We serve a selection of 3 beers from Shiga Kogen Ales, one of the closest microbrewery to onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada:

Pale Ale (a fruity beer)
IPA (strong bitter taste)
Porter (for fans of dark beers)

The Shiga Kogen craft beers are proving to be popular with most of our guests here at Kamesei. Especially during the hot summer months. In fact, some days we sell more bottles of the craft beers then the regular Asahi beer. Our alcohol distributor commented that our sales of craft beer are amazing. We may be the top seller of any inn of all of Togura-Kamiyamada!

With all due apologies to those who prefer beer on tap, I respectfully suggest you try a Shiga Kogen craft beer, here at Kamesei Ryokan!

この夏休みで何回か、亀清旅館のロビーですいかパーティーをやりました。お客様の夕食後（私の布団引き後）で皆様がロビーに集まって頂いて、すいかを出しました。お客様との楽しいお話が出来、お客様同士で盛り上がり、きっと良い思い出になりました。

浴衣ですいか…なかなか良いですね。

Several times during this year's summer vacation holiday season, we had the guests gather in Kamesei's lobby for a watermelon party. After their dinner (and after my futon flipping), we served fresh Matsumoto Highland watermelon to everyone.

It was great getting to talk with our guests, and the guests themselves had fun chatting with each other.

亀清旅館は先日に日テレに紹介して頂いた。今までの取材の中で「若旦那vs大女将」が大げさに取り上がれた。まあ、テレビだから何でも大げさにするとは思いますが、真面目に受けた方もいらっしゃるようです。こんなコメントを頂きました：

「若旦那さんもう少し女将さんを立て、女将さんの言う通りにした方が良いです。日本のことわざの中に、ごうにきたらごうにしたがえ と言うことわざが有ります。
日本の旅館は女将さんと、亡くなった旦那さんとの歴史でも有るのです。
全て若旦那さんの思う通りにするのは良くないです。特に大きな立て看板を無くしたのは
きっと旅館の経営に響くと思いました。
女将さんをもっと立て、もっと日本らしい旅館にして欲しい。特にアメリカみたいなベッドはいらない
全ての意味を理解して欲しい。
もっと女将さんのいにそうようにして上げて下さいね！」
（名前無し）

どうやって答えればよいか困っていたから、取り敢えずは「すみませんが、ベッドは大女将の要望だった」と。

もう一方でこんなコメントも頂きました:

「タイラーさん、ご無沙汰しております。
以前家内とお世話になりましたSです。
日本テレビでタイラーさんの相変わらずの
奮闘振りを拝見し懐かしくなりメールさせて頂きました。
TVを拝見すると皆さんお元気そうで何よりです。
亀清旅館の顔と言うべき大きな看板を取り去るなどと言う事は考えてもいませんでしたが、無くなってみると確かに立派な松が引き立ち、印象が代わるのには驚きです。
今後は若主人の時代ですから、新しい発想で、社長の気持ちも少しは汲み取りながら奮闘？されますように！」

亀清の玄関の立て看板は存在が大きかった様です。しかしどうですか？現状の雰囲気は写真で見えますが、なくていかがなもんでしょうか？

そして、残念ながら若旦那と大女将の関係はテレビで映ったほどバットルじゃない。二人とも目的は一緒:　お客様が更に喜んで頂けるように亀清旅館をより良い宿に育つ事。

Nihon TV's recent show on Kamesei Ryokan featured the conflict between myself and the boss (my mother-in-law). I thought everyone understood TV always over-dramatizes everything, but at least 1 person took it at face value. We got a comment from some anonymous person blasting me for ignoring the boss's wishes and tearing down the old steel sign in front of our inn. Furthermore, as per the old "When in Rome" saying, I shouldn't try to Westernize the ryokan by adding a bed.

I wasn't sure how to reply, other than saying, "Excuse me, but the bed was the boss's idea.

Unfortunately, the boss and I don't fight as much as TV would want. We both have the same goal: Make Kamesei into an even better inn to create even more enjoyment for our guests.
