先日は亀清に泊まっていた外国のお客さんが観光協会から自転車を借りました。千曲川沿いで自転車に乗るのはそういうお客さんに人気があります。旅行中で電車やバスばかり乗っているのでたまに綺麗な空気を吸いながら、自然の中でエクササイズをするのは気持ち良い訳です。
ところで、外国人が自転車を借りる時の問題は申込書が日本語だけです。英語圏の方はかわいいそうです。その問題を直しておきました。私がその申込書を英語に訳しておきました。これで英語圏の旅行者も気楽で戸倉上山田温泉で自転車を借りれるようになりました。
ちなみに、翻訳した時に海外の似ているような申込書を参考にしました。そうすると、日本の方は簡単で良いと分かりました。欧米では泥坊が多いせいか、弁護士が多いせいか、欧米の自転車レンタル書が細かい！

The other day, a couple of our guests from overseas rented bicycles and went for a ride along the Chikuma River. It's a popular activity for travellers from abroad, probably because they're normally couped up in a train or bus for most of their trip and it's nice to get out in the great outdoors, breathe some fresh air, and get in some exercise for a change. Plus it's a great, leisurely way to see the countryside.
Anyways, one problem that tends to arise is that the rental agreement is only in Japanese. Well, I've fixed that problem. I translated the form into English. So now English-speaking tourists can easily rent bicycles here at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen.
One thing I realized while doing the translation was how simple the form is. I looked up some examples from bicycle rental places overseas. Maybe it's because there are more thieves there than in Japan, or perhaps just more lawyers, but their forms were so detailed and complicated!

BEE Japan 2009は今、千曲市を通っています。地元の千曲サイクリングクラブは合流して、今日はさらしな神社で交流会、明日は軽井沢まで見送り。私も一緒に走りたいね！残念ながら、宿の方が忙しすぎて・・・　でも、取り敢えず、ライダーの皆に温泉を提供しておきました。
BEEの皆さんは千曲市、戸倉上山田温泉が良い思いでになったでしょうか？これからも頑張ってください。応援していま～す！

And ... Vegetarian. (They say at least grasshoppers are okay. Phew, they'll be able to survive here in Nagano then.)
Who / What is this? It's the BEE Japan 2009 tour, and they are in Chikuma City today. Our local Chikuma Cycling Club hosted a get-together at Sarashina Shrine today, and will accompany the BEE riders to Karuizawa tomorrow. I really wish I could ride along, but things are too busy here at the inn. At least we here at Kamesei were able to provide an onsen bath for the riders.

夏休みで東京とか名古屋からの方が信州にアウトドアーのスポーツを良くやりに来ます。最近のお客さんでゴルフやハイキング、釣り、サイクリング、マレットゴルフ、カヌーも！をやっています。我々信州人も負けないように信州の自然に出て、楽しまなきゃ！
お泊りになった森永さん達はマイ自転車を持ってきました。朝は食事前に娘さんと親子で千曲川沿いのサイクリングロードを走る予定でした。せっかくだったから、私も早く起きて、自転車を準備して、息子たちと一緒に行こうと思った。が、息子達が起きない！代わりに、美咲ちゃんをトレーラに乗せて、この戸倉上山田温泉から坂城まで乗りました。千曲川の向こう側の山から上がった太陽さんは綺麗でした。
昼間に自転車乗りは暑過ぎるけど、朝は涼しい風があって、とっても気持ちよかった。皆様、今度はご一緒に行きませんか？

Lots of people come up from Tokyo and Nagoya to Nagano during the summer to do outdoor sports. Some of our recent guests have come for golf, cycling, hiking, fishing, mallot golf, even kayaking!
One guest, Morinaga-san, brought his own bicycle. He was planning on going for a ride with his daughter in the morning before breakfast. I thought it would be great to take one of our sons and go with him. So I got my bike prepared and ready to go, but ... the sons wouldn't wake up. So instead, I put Misaki in our little trailer and went for a ride on the Cycling Road along the Chikuma River from Kamiyamada Onsen to neighboring Sakaki. The sun coming up over the mountains on the other side of the river was a spectacular sight to see.
It's too hot to go riding in afternoons here, but mornings are great with a cool breeze. Won't you come and go for an early morning ride with me?

今日はまた子供たちと一緒に自転車で千曲サイクリングロードを走りました。（今回は６歳のKenちゃんがマイ自転車で！）八幡神社の入口にこんな橋があります。「自転車で渡ってみれば」と言ったら、息子達が実践した。勿論、無理だった。でも、思ったのは、こういうアーチになっている橋はどういう目的でしょうか？何かにシンボル？飾り？誰かの遊び心で作られた？

遊び心で作られたかどうか分かりませんが、子供たちは遊び心で渡ってみた。

I took our kids for another bike ride today along the Chikuma Cycling Road. (This time 6-year old Kenny rode his own bike!) At the Yawata Shrine, we saw this funky little bridge. I mentioned to the boys they should try riding their bikes across it. Of course, they weren't able to make it. But it made me wonder: what exactly is this type of arched bridge for? Is it a symbol? A decoration? Somebody's practical joke?

What ever the bridge's real intent is, our kids had fun with it.

Yawata's shrine is approximately 30 minutes from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen by bicycle (at a 6-year-old's pace).

久しぶりだった。

戸倉上山田温泉からスタートして、川中島古戦場や松代を回って、往復で５０ｋｍの自転車乗り。

リーダーの金井さんは相変わらず気持ち良い小道や、冷たくて美味しい湧き水スポットを良く知っていて、喋りながら走るペースで最高に楽しい自転車ツアーでした。

私はシアトルに住んでいた時に自転車を良く乗りました。亀清に引越ししたから千曲サイクリングクラブの皆様となかなか予定は合わせない。でも昨日は久しぶりに乗れて、本当に気持ちよかった。最後で皆さんが亀清にお風呂を入りに来ました。さすがサイクリングin信州！

All I can say is, it was so nice to finally get in the saddle again.

Yesterday the Chikuma Cycling Club held its 2nd annual Furinkazan Tour, a 50km round trip ride starting at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, passing through the Kawanakajima Historical Battle Site and Matsushiro.

Back in the States, I did a lot (and I mean LOT) of bicycling. But running the inn here at Kamesei, it's very difficult to align my schedule with that of the Chikuma Cycling Club. Yesterday, however, I finally got to ride with them, and it felt soooo good. The CCC members stopped at Kamesei at the end for a soak in our mineral bath. Ahh, yes -- cycling Nagano-style.

長男のアンディー君の９歳の誕生日に合わせて、息子達を連れてサイクリングしてきました。戸倉上山田温泉から千曲川沿いのサイクリングロードを走って、八幡の方へ行きました。武水別神社を見学してから王龍でラーメンを食べて、自転車で八幡の古い町並みをぶらぶらしました。私はその町が大好きです。つちかべの建物がまだ沢山残っていて、車の時代の前からの細い道、あちらこちらに格好良い瓦の屋根・・・　代表の建物が松田家だそうです。今は千曲市が改造していますが、一部は見えました。
その次、近くの大運時によって見ました。はすの花で有名です。花は７月じゃないと咲いていないけど、お寺はお城のような雰囲気で感動的です。その後は「竹林の湯」でお風呂を浴びました。銭湯としては綺麗ですが、お湯はやはり戸倉上山田温泉の価値。（笑）
帰りはもう一度、武水別神社に寄って、うづら餅を買いました。帰りのチャリ乗りの力の為になりました。

For our son Andy's 9th birthday, I took our 2 sons for a bicycle ride. We started out here at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen and rode on the Cycling Road along the Chikuma River. At Yawata, we rode over to Takemizuwake Shrine, and stopped at Oryu Restaurant for some ramen. Then we putzed around the Yawata area on our bikes.
I really love Yawata's old neighborhood, with the earthen-walled buildings and narrow, pre-car era lanes, and everywhere cool roof lines with the kawara roof tiles. The main structure in the area is supposedly the Matsuda House, which Chikuma City is currently reconstructing.
After that, we stopped at Daiun-ji Temple. The water lilies in its massive pond won't bloom until July, but the temple is still impressive with its castle-like structure. Next we rode over to Chikurin-no-yu for a bath. As a bathouse, it was nice and new, but the bathwater sure can't compare to the natural mineral water we enjoy here at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. Finally we stopped once more at Takemizuwake Shrine to buy some Uzura-mochi sticky rice cakes for energy for the ride home.

冬が終わって春になると、自然に自転車を乗りたくなりませんか？私の自転車の修理がやっと終わって、信州の自然の中で走りたくてしょうがない。と言っても、今日は雨でNGでした。残念。
さて、私の事はどうでも良いとして、千曲サイクリングクラブの次の市民サイクリングが６月６日（土）に予定してあります。金井さんの上手いガイドで風林火山コースを走る予定で、初心者は大歓迎です。観光客も大歓迎です。

As winter turns to spring, don't you just get an urge to get out and enjoy the outdoors? For me, the warm spring air makes me want to hop on my bike and cruise around. My bike just got back from the shop yesterday, and I was all pumped up ready to ride today. Until it started raining. Bummer!

But forget about me and my problems -- there is an event coming up for everyone to participate in. The Chikuma Cycling Club will hold another Fun Ride on Saturday 06-June, starting at 8am in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, following the Cycling Road along the Chikuma River, and coursing through the samurai battle field at Kawanakajima and the castle at Matsushiro, before returning back for a 50km loop. No hills and a leisurely pace. Perfect for beginners and/or tourists. Feel free to contact me if interested -- everyone is welcome. There are rental cycles available at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen for anyone who is bike-less.

松本市に会議に行ったついでに浅間温泉にある自転車専門店バイクランチに行きました。私の自転車のオーバーホールを頼んどいた。オーナーの雷太さん(タイラーじゃなくて、ライタ）と色々楽しい話が出来ました。雷太さんはSydneyの五輪選手だった。去年にお店を開いて、松本の周辺にマウンテンバイクのトレール作り、パルコに展示したり、松本で自転車で盛り上がるように頑張っています。自転車を通じて町興し。いいですね。応援しています。
After my meeting in Matsumoto, I stopped at the Bike Ranch bike store to get my road bike tuned up. I met the owner, Raita-san. He was an Olympic Athlete at the Sydney Games. Raita-san opened up his shop a year ago, and has been active in building mountain bike trails in the Matsumoto area. Civic improvement via cycling -- way to go!

千曲市屋代近辺にCafe自転車やと言う面白いレストランがあります。オーナーさんは自転車でオーストラリアを回ったそうで本人は自転車にはまっているようです。お店の中のあちらこちらに自転車のテーマの物が飾ってあります。
千曲サイクリングクラブの新しいジャージの試着が今その自転車やで行っていますので今日は息子達を連れて、皆が自転車で自転車やまで行って、美味しいメキシカン料理を食べて、楽しんできました。有難うございました！
In the Yashiro district of Chikuma City is this funky restaurant, Cafe Jitenshaya. Jitensha means bicycle, and the owner in his previous life rode a bike around Australia. His shop shows his passion for 2-wheelers, with bicycle-themed decorations galore.
The Chikuma Cycle Club is in the process of making new cycling jerseys, and all the members are having to go to Jitenshaya to try on different sizes. So I took our 2 boys, and we rode our bicycles to the bicycle-themed restaurant, grubbed out on great Mexican, and had a lot of fun! I want to thank the owner for providing such an enjoyable restaurant.

千曲サイクリングクラブの新しいサイクルジャージが出来る予定です。うちとに息子がなんちゃったメンバーとなっております。（去年は一回しか参加できなかった。今年は沢山の面白そうなツアーが予定してあるから楽しみにしています。そして、こんな格好良いジャージも出来て、嬉しいです。亀清旅館のロゴも入れていただけると言う話しもあります。従って、今年はもっと積極的に参加しないとあかん！Spitzさん、igaraaさん、色々とありがとうございます！
Chikuma Cycling Club's 2009 tentative schedule has been announced. New jerseys are also being planned (possibly with Kamesei Ryokan's logo!). My son Andy and I were only able to participate once last year. Hopefully this season we'll get out riding w/ CCC more often.
