27日に旅館青年部の全国大会は沖縄で行われました。この戸倉上山田温泉の支部長として、私も飛んで行きました。そこで、私が担当している長野県青年部のインバウンド委員会の2年間の行事が10万円のＯＢ賞を受賞しました。「飛び出せ長野、飛び出せ日本！」と言うプロジェクトで、県知事と北京の商談会へ行ったり、expedia.comやbooking.comなどの海外送客業者約15社を松本に呼んで、私達宿泊施設経営者の為の商談会を開いたり、その活動が認められました。

写真は私と県部長の宮坂さんの受賞の時です。本来ならば、書類を準備してくれた総務の宇佐美さんと兄妹委員会のしの委員長及び委員会の皆様が一緒に受けたかったけど、取り敢えずは代表として部台に上がりました。

ご存知かもしれませんが、この戸倉上山田温泉支部の「温泉塾」企画も受賞が出来ると望んでいましたが、残念ながらＮＧでした。優勝した企画を見たら、納得できました。Ｙｏｕ　Ｔｕｂｅで30万回再生されたＬａｄｙ　Ｋａｇａの企画やメディアで取り上がれた新潟県の美味しい朝食企画は全国レベルの影響があった。私が企画した温泉塾は比較的に可愛い物でした。受賞はしなかったけど、誇りに思っています。

Japan's Ryokan Junior Association once-every-two-years national convention was held in Okinawa on the 27th. As leader of the Togura-Kamiyamada division, I flew down for the festivities. There I had the honor of receiving the 100,000 yen OB Prize for the Nagano Junior Association's Inbound Project.

Our efforts in promoting Nagano overseas, including flying with the governor for a travel fair in Beijing, and having expedia.com, booking.com and a dozen other inbound-related companies gather in Matsumoto for a trade fair, garnered the attention of the judges and resulted in being awarded this prize.

Pictured is myself and Nagano Prefecture leader Miyasaka-san accepting the award. I feel that all the team members, especially Usami-san who put the materials together and my sister committee chairperson Shino-san, should have been up on the stage, too. They all worked so hard!

As you may know, I was also hoping the project I ran here in Togura-Kamiyamada, Onsen-Jook, would also win a prize. Unfortunately it was not to be. But after seeing the projects that did win, I could understand why. The Lady Kaga promotional video for Kaga Onsen has 300,000 views on YouTube, and the other overall winner, Niigata Prefecture for their "Most Delicious Breakfast" project got nation-wide media exposure. My Onsen-Jook deal just doesn't compare. But I am still proud of it.

将来的に紙の観光パンフが要らなくなるのではないかと思う。なぜなら、スマホの利用が増えて、尚且つ観光アプリが充実してきて、観光アプリで対応できるようになるから。

長野県の中で佐久市が進んでいる方です。今日は千曲市の観光課の方々と佐久市の役場へ行って、どういう取り組みしているかの説明を受けました。特に中仙道や佐久市の歴史的なお寺や神社の情報が濃い。実際に紙媒体のパンフの一部を止めたと言う成功事例になっている。と言いながら、利用人数がまだ少ない事と、海外の旅行社の対応（外国からのスマホでGPSの機能を使ったら国際電話になって高く付く）等の悩みが残っているそうです。

千曲市の役場の皆さんは観光客以外に、一般市民にも役に立つ（バス停やルートの情報、市の施設の紹介など）事で興味が深かったようだ。インバウンドの事ももちろん対応性がありそう。

（インバウンドの事で一つ笑えたのは市内の宿泊施設が海外のホテル予約サイトの登録の必要性の話になって、役場の方が「登録してないのか？努力不足だ！」と騒ぎ出した。だから私が苦労しているのよ！）

I firmly believe that in the future, we won't need any paper-based travel brochures. More and more people are using smart phones, and more and more travel applications are being developed, gradually they will take the place of paper pamphlets.

Smart phone travel app benefits include:
*Ease of updating
*Video and other formats can be added
*Foreign languages can be conveniently added
*GPS functions allow users to see where they are on maps
*You don't need to kill trees to make them.

Here in Nagano Prefecture, Saku City is on the cutting edge of smart phone tourism app development. Several members of the Chikuma City Tourism Dept. went on a mission to Saku to hear their story, and I tagged along.

Saku's tourism app is particularly strong in info on Nakasendo (the old road between Tokyo and Kyoto) spots as well as historical shrines and temples. They have in fact done away with at least one paper-based brochure thanks to the new app. The down-side is the actual numbers of people using the app and sightseeing in Saku is still pretty limited.

The group from Chikuma's city hall seemed to be excited not only about the tourism possibilities for such an app, but the usefulness for citizens of the city as well. For example, bus route info and hours, etc. for city services. As for using such an app as a tool for attracting tourists from overseas ('inbound'), there was a definite interest in that, too.

As a sidenote, talking about 'inbound' and the need for our town's hotels and inns to be listed on overseas accommodation booking sites, the leader was upset: "They aren't listed? Are they being lazy?" Why do you think I've been working so hard?!?!

先日はスイスからのお客様とオーストリアから遊びに来ているシリアを連れて、長野市へお出かけしました。

善光寺参りの為？
お洒落の大門でお買い物？

いいえ、忍者の道場作り。

ちょっと非日常的な作業だった。戸隠れ道忍術を教えている仲間がお稽古の為に今までいつも公民館を借りていたけど、善光寺の周辺の空き部屋活性化の方と連携を取って、江戸時代の土蔵とその隣の住宅を使うようになった。道場として使える前にリフォームが必要なので私も手伝っています。今回は数人を引っ張って大勢で作業しました。将来的に忍者屋敷や稽古体験とかも出来る様になる予定。

（多分、こういう忍者「遊び」を馬鹿にする方が多いだろうけど、一度は稽古を体験してみてください。骨が折れたら知らないよ！）

戸隠忍者・善光寺道場の新点をまたお知らせします。

The other day I took a guest from Switzerland and a buddy in visiting from Australia, and we headed up to Nagano City.

Not to go sightseeing at Zenkoji Temple.
And not to go shopping at the fashionable Daimon complex.

We went to work on a ninja dojo.

Not exactly an everyday activity, eh? One of my buddies carries on the Togakure-do school of ninjitsu and in fact teaches it on a regular basis. He had been renting a community center for the lessons, but teamed up with a group working on finding uses for the empty stores and buildings around Zenkoji, and he ended up getting to rent an Edo-era earthen-walled storehouse and the house next door. Before it can be used as a dojo, some serious remodelling has to take place, and that's where we came in!

There will eventually be enough room for a ninja-maze and ninja training sessions for tourists. I am helping out any and every way I can.

I am sure many of you are laughing at Tyler here playing 'ninja'. But before you laugh, try your hand at one of the ninja lessons. And don't come crying if you break a bone. It's the real deal.

亀清旅館の布団引き屋でいながら、この２年間で長野県旅館組合青年部インバウンド委員会の委員長も務めております。

その運動として、
去年は渋湯田中温泉で「インバウンドアレルギーを解きましょう！」パネルディスカッションを開いて、外国人観光客を積極的に受けている現場にいる４人の事例でまだ「インバウンド」に足して不安のある宿の経営者がちょっとでもその不安を取り消すとの目的。
そして、松本で「インバウンドで売り上げアップ！」インバウンド商談会を開催しました。６月２５日に松本で行われた。私がインバウンド送客業者１２社を呼んで、旅館ホテル約６０社が集まって、実際に海外からの予約とつなぐ道具を提供した。

長野県の旅館・ホテルの皆さんはインバウンドのアレルギーをちゃんと溶けて、そして実際に受ける様の取り組むまでになって、皆が積極的です。有難い限り。

既に「次も期待しているよ」と言われています。これからも頑張ります！

Besides just being the official futon-flipper here at Kamesei Ryokan, I am also the chairperson of the Nagano Prefecture Ryokan-Hotel Association's Junior Association Inbound Committee. During my 2 year term,

The first year I held a panel discussion in Shibu-Yudanaka Onsen. The panelists were 4 innkeepers actively pursuing customers from overseas. Many innkeepers have concerns about accepting foreigners into their inns, so through this conference we successfully allayed those worries.

For the 2nd year, I organized gathered representatives from 12 companies dealing with bookings from overseas travellers, like Expedia.com, booking.com, the Japanese Inn Group, etc. Over 60 hotels and inn owners gathered for the conference held in Matsumoto on 25-June.

These two events were a great success. Many participants are already asking me what's next!

長野市インバウンド仲間、NInJAプロジェクトの皆さんと新しい企画が始まりました。実際に戸隠道忍術を教えている宮下忍者が稽古の為に善光寺の近くの公民館を借りていました。常設な道場の必要があったが、戸隠のちびっこ忍者センター（子供の遊び塲）と忍法センター（資料館）では稽古が出来ない。善光寺の近くの空き部屋を借りる様になって、これから道場を設立する予定。

観光客（特に忍者を憧れる外国人）には魅力があるのではないかと、稽古体験も出来る様に、そして甲冑の着付けや、道具触れと、もちろん、忍者屋敷まで作ろうかと。

この夏は戸隠忍者善光寺道場作りになりそう。

The members of the NInJA Project, a group of people interested in promoting Nagano to visitors from overseas, has a new project. One of our members is a real-life Togakushi ninja and teaches a class for kids every week. Miyashita-san's been wanting a dojo for his lessons, and has arranged to use an empty house near Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City.

Our group is hoping to make the facility open to tourists to come and experience an actual ninjutsu training lesson. Eventually the dojo will have a hands-on tool display, a ninja armor wearing corner, and a secret ninja course complete with trap doors and hidden tunnels.

It looks like my project this summer will be to build a ninja house!

NInJA Project

笑顔と１００年前の機織り機。

笑顔はオーストラリアからの高校生、Briannaさん。学校の成績が良くて、お祝いでお父さんが日本旅に連れてきました。

１００年の機織り機は小岩井紬工房の機械。日本三大紬の一つ、上田紬を作っている数百年の歴史の工房。現在の若手職人との姉妹がその伝統的な技術で昔と同じく着物の着尺や帯はもちろん作っているけど、現代的な商品「携帯ストラップ」や現代な織り（銅の糸！）も実践しています。

体験は２５００円（コースター、約３０分）から出来ます。私もやったことがあり、とっても大思い出になる。

A smiley face and a 100 year old loom.

The smile belongs to Brianna, a highschool student from Australia. Her dad brought her to Japan as a reward for her good grades.

The loom is in the silk weaving workshop of Koiwai Tsumugi Kobo in nearby Ueda City. The local style of silk weaving ("Ueda Tsumugi") is considered to be one of the top 3 traditions in all of Japan. The current generation of the Koiwai family is continuing the business that dates back several hundred years, using the age-old techniques to make kimono fabric as they always have. But they are are also introducing new products (cell phone straps) and using their weaving techniques for high-tech purposes (weaving copper wire into mats for electrical grounding for a local factory).

At the Koiwai Silk Weaving Workshop, you too can sit at one of the 100 year-old looms and weave your own silk creation. Sessions start at 2,500 yen for a coaster (takes approx. 30 mins.) I myself made a wall hanging for one of our guest rooms. It was a very memorable experience.

One that the smile on Brianna's face can attest to.

小岩井紬工房 Koiwai Silk Weaving Workshop

シンガポールからのHanさんは亀清旅館に一晩でお泊りになりました。新しく造った戸倉上山田温泉のグルメガイド・散歩の地図の中国語バージョンを喜んでくれました。このマップを使って、温泉街を回りました。

英語版は２年前に出来て、今度は他の旅館の中国人スタッフの翻訳と千曲市の補助金を使って、中国語（簡体字）版がやっとできました。シンガポールで中国本体と同じ簡体字を使っているようで、今回のHanさんとちょうど役に立ちました。

本人はもちろん喜んだけど、作成に当たって苦労した私も嬉しかった！

The new Chinese version of onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada's gourmet guide / walking map is getting put to use. Han-san, a tourist from Singapore, spent a night here at Kamesei Ryokan and used the map to explore the town.

Two years ago I put together the English version of the map. Now, with the help of a Chinese staffmember of another inn as well as grant money from Chikuma City, I got this Chinese version published. It is simplified Chinese, as used in the mainland. Singapore apparently also uses the same characters so Han-san put the map to good use.

Han-san was happy to have the map. I, too, was happy to see all my hard effort pay off.

戸倉上山田温泉の散歩地図・グルメガイドの中国版が出来ました。

我が亀清旅館はJNTO登録ビジット・ジャパン案内所旅として2年前ぐらいに戸倉上山田温泉の散歩地図・グルメガイド英語版を作りました。私が亀清の英語圏のお客様の喜んだお店など23軒、レストラン20軒に回って、説明して、説得して、お金の協力を頂いて、作りました。（皆がお金を提供してくれたって、海外のお客様の受入れを積極的に考えているという事で、感心しました！）

そのマップを元にして、今度は千曲市の補助金で中国版（簡体字）が出来ました。ホテル園山荘の中国人スタッフの翻訳のお蔭で、そして千曲市の補助金を使って、2000部を印刷しました。

正直って、中国人の観光客はそんなに多くはない現状です。しかし、このマップを使って、長野県の観光協会などを通じて中国人のお客様にPRしたいと思っております。去年は私が県旅館青年部と北京での商談会に行きましたので、その時に合った旅行会社にも送ります。

今回の中国語マップの作成に当たって、千曲市観光協会に英語も中国語も両方を.pdfで観光協会のHPに載せて頂きましたので、そちらにもご覧になって頂けます。

戸倉上山田温泉の海外での存在は更にUp!

Onsen Town Togura-Kamiyamada has a new Walking Map & Gourmet Guide in Chinese.

Our inn, Kamesei Ryokan, is a JNTO-registered Visit Japan Information Center. As part of that responsibility, 2 years ago I created the "Onsen Town Togura-Kamiyamada Walking Map & Gourmet Guide" in English. I personally went around to 23 different shops and businesses as well as 20 various restaurants, explained the project, convinced them to cooperate, and received their financial assistance to make the map.

This time, with a grant from Chikuma City and translating help from one of the staff at Hotel Marusansou, we now have a (simplified) Chinese version.

To be honest, our town does not have many guests from mainland China so I am not sure how useful the map will be. However, I hope to run it by the prefecture's Tourism Association as well as to the contacts I made in Beijing from the conference I went to there last December.

In conjunction with the Chinese map, both it and the original English one have been uploaded to the internet on the Chikuma City Tourism Assoc. website.

外国人観光客を招く(＝インバウンド)が段々と話題になってきている。今度は長野県の一番大きい地方銀行、八十二銀行が相談しに来ました。東京からのコンサルタント、リッキービジネスの小林さん(写真)もお見えになった。

銀行として観光業者とお客さんのマッチングが目的だそうです。私なりに今までのインバウンドの取り組みをお話しして、いくつかな案を出しました。

銀行さんがこんなに真剣で、そして何と私と相談にきてくれて、嬉しいです。

Lately it seems like more and more organizations are turning their attention to 'Inbound' (attracting tourists from overseas). Nagano's largest regional bank, 82 Bank, came by to discuss ways they could facilitate tourism-related businesses with Inbound. Ms. Kobayashi with Tokyo consulting firm Rickey Business, joined the discussion.

I think it's great our regional bank is turning its attention to Inbound, and was honored they came to me for suggestions.

白人のカップルさんが自転車で上山田温泉を通っているのを見て、声をかけてみたら長野の新しく出来たプロバスケチーム（信州ブレイブウォリアズ；ホームタウン＝千曲市）の選手、Derekさんでした。

亀清のお風呂に誘って、入ってもらったので、上ったらロビーで千曲市の色々を説明しました。以前に書いた様に、この戸倉上山田温泉と千曲市の英語での情報は最近にうんと増えてきました。説明するに当たって、楽でした。

以前はLee選手とEdward選手と会って、千曲市の事を詳しく説明しました。今度は是非Tyler選手（私より大きい！）と新しいKyle選手（さらに大きい！）ともゆっくり話したいな。

この千曲市は段々と国際的になってきています。その基礎が出来て、良かった！

I saw a foreign couple ride through Kamiyamada Onsen on bikes and said 'hi' to them. It turned out to be Derek-san, one of the players on the Shinshu Brave Warriors, the new pro hoops team headquartered here in Chikuma City.

I invited them to a bath here at Kamesei Ryokan, and afterwards we chatted in our lobby. I filled them in on all the inside info about Togura Kamiyamada and the city as a whole, and gave them a collection of English language materials. As mentioned, that collection is steadily growing.

Before the basketball season started, two other players, Edward-san and Lee-san stopped by to get 'de-briefed' about the city. One of these days I'd like to sit down with the other two foreign players, Tyler-san (dude's even bigger than me) and Kyle-san (even taller yet!).

Chikuma City is becoming more and more international. I am happy to be involved in making it more English-friendly!
