2013.08.21: 長野に来る理由 Reasons to Come to Nagano

先日は世界遺産を見ました。中央アルプスの駒ヶ岳ロープウィーに乗って、千畳敷カールから南アルプスの上に出ていました。もう、「富士山」と言わなくなった。「世界遺産」と呼ぶようになった。

富士山が世界遺産に選ばれてから更に注目されるようになり、色んな所で記念イベントや展示が行われている。

その一つは長野市の北野カルチャーセンターです。9月28日までは日本画家の富士山の絵を展示している。日本人に最も関心深い山は当然、日本画家にも愛されて、絵の主人子になります。

Japan's Mount Fuji was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on June 22, 2013. Already deeply infused into the hearts and minds of the Japanese people, this new designation means an even more hightened awareness of the mountain. This has resulted in numerous Fuji-themed promotions throughout the country this summer.

One such event is a temporary exhibit at Nagano City's Kitano Cultural Center of paintings of Mount Fuji by Japan's greatest artists. The show runs through September 28th. So on your trip to Nagano City to see the esteemed Zenkoji Temple, you can get your World Heritage fix, too!

The fabled moon-reflecting terraced rice fields of Obasute are beautiful any time of year, but in the fall they turn a gorgeous shade of gold. Local volunteer guides will offer tours of the fields this fall. For details, inquire with us here at Kamesei Ryokan. Please note the volunteer guides don't speak English. So for non-Japanese speakers, it might be just as well to enjoy a walk through the fields on your own without being limited to the tour schedule.

地元の老人ホームに頼まれて、上山田神楽保存会の仲間と和太鼓をたたきました。老人ホームの盆踊り祭りだったので、ボランティアーで和太鼓をたたくのは私達だけでした。

という事で、生まれてから初めて和太鼓演奏しました。

まあ、テクニークはとにかく、車いすで一生懸命踊っているおじさん、そのおじさんの嬉しい涙を見て、私達も嬉しかったです。

旅館青年部や市の観光協会など、私のさまざまの活動をしている中、こういう地味の活動も大事だな。

One of the local old folks homes was in need of a taiko drum player for their Bon Odori summer festival. Me and the leader of the Lion Dance troupe were the only ones to volunteer, so for the first time in my life I found myself performing taiko drumming for an audience.

Seeing one of the old guys dancing in his wheelchair with tears of joy streaming down his face made it all worth-while.

With all of my ryokan association, tourism association and other activities, this sort of simple work is also important!

今年はチーム戸倉上山田旅館青年部はまた千曲川イカダ下りに参加しました。温泉街の万葉橋から出発して、約7.5km下って、千曲橋でゴール。2013年は8月18日に開催された。

去年は私がイカダに乗って、1時間15分で着いた。今年は私が応援団で車でゴールまで行った。川の水が少なくて、イカダは3時間ぐらいかかちゃった！

千曲川は普通、川辺から見る。
しかし、川から川辺と周辺の山々を見ると、別な世界って感じ。土手の外側の街が見えないから完全に自然な環境。

来年は一緒に千曲川イカダ下りをやりましょう！

On August 18th, the 3rd annual Chikuma River Rafting event took place. Once again, Team Togura-Kamiyamada Ryokan Junior Association participated.

The rafts start out from Manyo Bridge here at our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. They float downriver 7.5 kilometers to the finish line, Chikuma Bridge.

Last year, I got ride the raft, and it took us about 1 hour 15 minutes to reach the goal. This year, I was in charge of driving down and picking everyone up. Due to lower water level in the river, it took over 3 hours for the teams to float to the finish.

Normally everyone enjoys the Chikuma River from the banks. But seeing the banks and the surrounding mountains from the river is an entirely different perspective. Because the dike blocks the view of the buildings and homes of the city, all you see is natural beauty.

Next year, how about participating in the Chikuma River Rafting with me?

この間にお客さんに怒られました：
「生ビールがない？！普通なら旅館は生ビールがあるよ！」と。
まあ、大きい宿はそうかもしれませんが、亀清旅館の様な小さい宿は樽を開けたら賞味期限まで使い切れる訳ないです。

その代わりじゃないですが、私達亀清旅館で実は、地ビールに拘りがございます。北信の代表の地ビール、志賀高原「玉村本店」から3種類を扱っております：

ペールエール　←フルーティー系
IPA　←苦い系
ポーター　←黒ビール

亀清旅館のお客様は大半喜んで頂いて御礼ます。この厚い夏は特に、地ビールが合うようで、恐らく通常のアサヒより売れている。問屋さんと話したら、「亀清旅館は地ビールの動きがすごい！」と言ってくれました。それこそ、恐らく戸倉上山田温泉では地ビール一番かもしれない。

生ビールのご希望の方には申し訳ございませんが、おいておりません。是非、地ビールの方を試してみてください。

Recently, we had a complaint from one of our guests:
"What do you mean no draft beer? All ryokans serve beer on tap!"
Well, perhaps large-scale ryokans do. But for small inns like Kamesei Ryokan, there is no way we could use up an entire keg after opening before the beer goes flat.

Not to take the place of draft beer, but we here at Kamesei Ryokan pride ourselves in offering craft beer to our guests. We serve a selection of 3 beers from Shiga Kogen Ales, one of the closest microbrewery to onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada:

Pale Ale (a fruity beer)
IPA (strong bitter taste)
Porter (for fans of dark beers)

The Shiga Kogen craft beers are proving to be popular with most of our guests here at Kamesei. Especially during the hot summer months. In fact, some days we sell more bottles of the craft beers then the regular Asahi beer. Our alcohol distributor commented that our sales of craft beer are amazing. We may be the top seller of any inn of all of Togura-Kamiyamada!

With all due apologies to those who prefer beer on tap, I respectfully suggest you try a Shiga Kogen craft beer, here at Kamesei Ryokan!

この夏のお盆辺りは夏らしい蒸し暑さで、辛い！
その時に、

滝シャワー！

戸倉上山田温泉から車で15分、ハイキングで15分で冠着山久露滝があります。落差10mの可愛いらしい滝ですが、滝水が冷たくて気持ち良い。夏の蒸し暑さと完全に別な世界。皆が滝でシャワーを浴びて、リフレッシュになりました。

今回は子供達と親せき5人で行ってきたが、招待的に亀清旅館のお客様と「滝シャワーツアー」で行きたいと思っています。

The middle of August this year has seen some classicly hot and humid days. So there's only one thing to do:

Take a Waterfall Shower!

A short 15 minute drive from our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada and a quick 15 minute hike will take you to Kuro Waterfall on the flanks of Kamuriki Mountain. The falls are rather short at 10-meters, but the water is icy cold and makes for a refreshing shower. It's a totally different world from the heat and mugginess down below.

This time I took our kids and some cousins, but I would love to make this a regular "Waterfall Shower Tour" that we could offer to our guests here at Kamesei Ryokan.

2013.08.15: 亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

この夏休みで何回か、亀清旅館のロビーですいかパーティーをやりました。お客様の夕食後（私の布団引き後）で皆様がロビーに集まって頂いて、すいかを出しました。お客様との楽しいお話が出来、お客様同士で盛り上がり、きっと良い思い出になりました。

浴衣ですいか…なかなか良いですね。

Several times during this year's summer vacation holiday season, we had the guests gather in Kamesei's lobby for a watermelon party. After their dinner (and after my futon flipping), we served fresh Matsumoto Highland watermelon to everyone.

It was great getting to talk with our guests, and the guests themselves had fun chatting with each other.

夏の千曲川：　鮎釣り Chikuma River in the Summer Means Ayu Fishing

長野新幹線が上田市で千曲川を渡るところ、
鮎釣りの皆様が川に入って、釣りを楽しんでいる。

Where the Nagano Shinkansen bullet train crosses the Chikuma River in Ueda City.
Ayu-fishing is one of the popular summer pastimes here.

アメ人が納得できるバーガー American-Approved Hamburger

我々アメ人はハンバーガーにうるさいです。時にはマクドやビッグボイで我慢するけど、本格的なバーガーを食べたい時に本格的なバーガーを食べたい。上田市にこのアメ人が納得できるバーガー屋さんを見つけました：　Mush&Room Cafeというダーツバー。自家製パンから手作り感で溢れているバーガー、その美味しい事！

Us Americans are picky when it comes to hamburgers. Sure we put up with the occasional Mickey D's or Big Boy, but when we get a hankering for a 'real' hamburger, only a 'real' hamburger will do. Fortunately, I found such a burger in Ueda, at a darts bar called "Mush & Room Cafe". From their insignia-imprinted buns, this burger was overflowing with home-made goodness. Highly recommended!
