碓氷峠から長野県に入って、千曲川沿いを走って、この戸倉上山田温泉に寄って、飯山市から国道２９２号で新潟に入って、上越市に下る。
日本トップ１０サイクリングコースの一つだそうです。我が亀清旅館がその立派なコースに一致していて、嬉しいです。

Ｗｙｌｉｅさんは色んな旅人とお料理で交流するのが使命なの様で、そのさまざまの経験でブログを書いています。

Wylie-san is taking a 6-month trip around Asia, with Japan being her first stop. And what a stop -- she's riding her bike across Honshu, from Tokyo through Nagano (including a stop here at our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada) to Joetsu City in neighboring Niigata Prefecture.
This Honshu Transverse is apparently one of the Top 10 Cycling Routes of Japan. And our little inn, Kamesei Ryokan, is right on the route!

Nicknamed the Couchsurfing Cook, Wylie-san's mission in life is to experience the many cuisines of the world through globetrotting travellers. See her blog for more.

戸倉上山田の又の若旦那のお祝い Another Young Innkeeper Celebration here at Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen

亮君、智恵実さん、お幸せに。

先日は戸倉上山田温泉の荻原館の若旦那が結婚しました。町中がお祝いしました。こうやってまたもう一つの宿の後継が確定となりました。町の皆は結婚したお二人の為にはもちろん、嬉しいですが、温泉の重要な宿はこれで安定となって、それこそ嬉しいです。

そして、今度は１９日にホテル晴山の若旦那、亮君が結婚しました。同じように、亮君と智恵実さんの為に嬉しいですが、更にもう１人の若旦那の支えてくれる人が来て、もう一つの後継が確定となって、なお嬉しいです。

亮君達に披露宴で私にとっては大きな事がありました。私と亮君が旅館組合青年部で何年間で一緒に活動しております。この２年間は私が順番的に青年部長となっている訳。青年部長の使命、披露宴の挨拶を頼まれました。大きな大きな役割です。緊張しながら、何とかしました。緊張したけど、正直って、ちょっと嬉しかったです。

When the young master of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's venerable Ogiwara-kan got married last week, everyone in town celebrated. Of course we are happy for the newly-wed couple, but we are also happy another inn's next generation has returned to continue the business.

Now, on the 19th, the young master of Hotel Seizan got married. Everyone is happy for Ryo and his new wife Chiemi. We are also elated yet another inn has a stable future.

This wedding reception was a major milestone for me, personally. Ryo and I have worked together on so many events over the years as members of the town's ryokan junior association. As the current leader of the association, it was my obligation and privilege to give the opening speech for the reception. I was a bit nervous but managed to pull it off.

亀清旅館では「若旦那と朝５時座禅」と言う独特なプランがございます。ハードルが高いせいか、あまり売れていない現状です。（バカ売れしたら逆に困る！体がもつかどうか不安になるから。）少し、お客様のご興味を結構引きますので一応、既に設定しております。

（たまにお客様に聞かれます。「本当に朝５時に座禅をするの？」って。「ご要望があれば、喜んでご一緒に行きますよ」と答えたら、大半の方は「起きられない」と逃げます。）

今朝はニューヨークから来たＷｙｌｉｅさんと一緒に、頑張って早く起きて開眼寺へ行って、座禅してきました。行く途中で太陽さんがちょうど上がってくるところでした。「田毎の月」で有名な姨捨棚田の側を通って、奥の善光寺平の光もあって、その景色を見て思いました:　朝５時に起きる価値はありますね。

One of Kamesei Ryokan's more unique Stay Plans is our "5am Zazen Meditation Plan". I take guests to Kaigan-ji Temple at 5am for a zazen session with the priest there, Shibata-san. In actuality, this plan very rarely sales. (I would be in trouble if it did -- I don't think I can wake up at 5am every morning!) But the plan serves a purpose in getting people's attention.

(Guests often ask me, "Do you really go do zazen meditation at 5am?" I always reply, "If anybody would like to go, I'd be happy to take them." Most people dodge the proposal because they can't wake up at 5am.)

This morning, I had the privelege of taking Wylie-san, a traveller from New York, for 5am meditation. As we drove to the temple, the sun was just starting to come up. Our route took us by the famous moon-reflecting terraced rice fields of Obasute. The fields have been harvested and the rice is stacked for drying. With the lights flickering in the Zenkoji Plain down below, it made for a beautiful sight.

Waking up at 5am was worth it!

上山田温泉をまもっている波閉科神社の９月２３日の中秋際に向かって、私達上山田神楽保存会が毎週の木曜日に練習しています。この間の練習にFM Naganoの池田レポーターと藤原ディレクターがお越しになって頂きました。中秋際とお神楽の事は９月２０日（木曜日）の「千曲市浪漫紀行・すいっちばっくおばすて」と言うお昼の番組に出るそうです。是非、お聞きになって下さい。

９月２３日の連休はそれぞれの地域の秋祭りが行われているようです。波閉科神社のは子供相撲から始まって、屋台、太鼓、カラオケコンテスト、そしてグランフィナーレは私どもお神楽の獅子舞です。花火の合図で、役員の提灯の光での獅子舞。神秘的です。機会があれば、是非行ってみてください。

Habeshina Jinja, the shrine that protects our onsen town Kamiyamada, will hold its Fall Festival on September 23rd, the autumnal equinox. Our Kamiyamada Kagura lion dance troupe has been practicing every Thursday to get our routine down pat for the big festival. This last practice, FM Nagano's reporter Ikeda-san and director Fujiwara-san attended and interviewed our shishi. The interview will be part of the weekly Chikuma City special broadcast this Thursday 20-Sept.

Habeshina Shrine's Fall Festival will be one of many festivals going on the autumnal equinox weekend at local shrines everywhere. For our shrine, Habeshina, the festival starts off with a sumo tournament (both adults and kids), then there'll be a taiko drum performance and a karaoke singing contest, before the nighttime grand finale of our Kagura lion dance performance. Our group will be greeted by fireworks as our procession ends in front of the shrine's main pavillion. There we perform our shishi dance by the light of the chochin lanterns held by the festival elders. It is a very moving performance.

上山田の田んぼではこの連休から忙しくなりました。稲刈りが始まりました。もう、その時期？一年は早いよね。

農家の皆様、ご苦労様です。今年の信米を食べるのは楽しみにしております。

There has been a lot of activity in Kamiyamada's rice fields this 3 day weekend. The farmers have started cutting the rice and putting it up to dry.

It seems so early. This year is going by so fast!

I wish all the farmers good luck with the harvest, and am looking forward to eating this year's new rice.

上山田のぶどうはちょうど今、ピークです。9月25日当たりまでが一番美味しいそうです。写真は巨峰、マスカットとしなのスマイル。今年の出来上がりは素晴らしいです。それぞれの房は沢山付っていて、一つずつが大きいです。

せっかくですから、この連休でお泊りになっているお客様の食事でサービスで出しています。

上山田のぶどう畑でぶどう狩体験が出来ます。
食べ放題で1000円(子供700円)。亀清旅館から車で５分です。（自転車で行ってみたら約１５分でした。)ご自宅にお届けの宅配もあります。

Kamiyamada's grape season is in its peak right now. From this weekend thru 9/25, the grapes will be at their best. (Pictured are the mainstay purple Kyohou, green Muscat grapes that we Westerners are familiar with, and red Shinano Smile, a new variety developed here in Nagano. This year's crop is excellent, with full bunches and excellent sizes to the globes of grapes.

I went to the orchard and bought grapes to serve to our guests this weekend as a special treat for everyone.

Kamiyamada's grape orchards offer all-you-can-eat grape picking for 1000 yen (700 yen for kids). Only 5 minutes by car from Kamesei Ryokan (15 minutes by bicycle). Come and try it!

去年の秋は客室「弥生」のトイレ・洗面台を改造しました（＝写真）。その前の年は「松風」の間の分でした。今年はどうするか、計画し始まっています。

我が亀清旅館では直す所が沢山あって、どこから始まるか、何を優先にすべきか、永遠の悩みです。でも、やはり、客室のトイレは重要です。皆さんは今までの狭いトイレを良く我慢して頂いてきました。トイレ・洗面台の快適感が大事ですね。松風と弥生はそこから始まって、明るくて広くなったトイレ・洗面台はお客様に喜ばれています。

今年はその継続を向かって、設計士・設備屋さんと相談に入りました。結果はお楽しみに。

Takeshi-san is impossible to beat!

先日はフィンランドからの小グループがお泊りになりました。皆さんは日本が大好きで、マイ浴衣も持っていました。

夕食のエンタテインメントの為に、３０分の芸者ショーを手配しました。三味線のベテランの春駒さんと最も上手な踊りの武さんが来てくれました。

お客様が音楽と踊りを見るだけと思い込んでいたが、
その訳に行きません。旬の唄そして地元を代表する［川中島合戦」の唄の後、今度はお客さんに踊りを教えて、三味線に合わせて皆で踊りました。その後、座敷遊びの金毘羅船船をやりました。武さんは経験深いなので、なかなか負けませんでした。最後はお客様が質問をし、私が間で通訳しました。

大盛り上がりの一時。戸倉上山田温泉って、良いね！

We had a small group of visitors from Finland come and stay at our inn. For their 2nd night's banquet, we arranged for a 30 minute geisha show. Shamisen veteran Harugoma-san and one of the most talented dancers, Takeshi-san came and delighted the guests.

The group from Finland apparently expected the show to simply be a passive affair of sitting back and watching some songs. They couldn't have been more mistaken. Harugoma-san and Takeshi-san did start out by performing two songs, the first a seasonal one and the second "Kawanakajima" about our area's famous samurai battle. But then they taught the guests how to do a dance, and everyone got up and joined in to move to the shamisen. After that, we played a geisha parlor game called Konpira Funefune. With all of her experience, Takeshi-san made for an unbeatable opponent. At the end, the guests asked questions to the geisha, with me serving as interpretor.

All in all, a great time for everyone. Isn't Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen great!

New Bridge for the Chikuma Cycling Road

千曲サイクリング道路は戸倉上山田温泉から、千曲川沿いで
下流（北）は飯山まで、
上流（南）は上田市まで
走っています。
当温泉から万葉橋近辺から土手をしばらく走れば、万葉スポーツエリアとのつながり道はずっと工事中で走り禁止となっていました。
しかし、先日は久しぶりに自転車で走ってみたら工事が終わって、出来立て（？）の新しい橋を走る事が出来ました。

（ただの自転車道路にこんな立派な橋が必要かとの疑問がありますが…）

この秋は千曲川沿いのサイクリングはいかがですか？川辺や周辺の景色を楽しみながら気持ちいい運動が出来ます。我が亀清旅館でレンタサイクルがございますので気楽でどうぞ。（１日・５００円、宿泊者限定）

The Chikuma Cycling Road spans out from our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada all the way to Ueda City upriver (south) and to Iiyama City downriver (north).
Just upriver from our onsen, though, one stretch of the path had been closed for construction. The other day, I went for a spin on my bike and was pleased to see the road is open again as the bridge construction is complete.

(Such a magnificent bridge for just a simple bike path?)

This fall, how about a bike ride along the Chikuma River, enjoying the view of the river as well as the surrounding mountains all while getting some great exercise. Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we have rental bicycles available for your convenience. (500 yen per day, for ryokan guests only.)
