千曲市・戸倉上山田温泉周辺の森地区「あんずの里」は日本一あんずの産地として知られています。４月の頭に花が咲くと確かに見事に綺麗です。

実は、戸倉上山田温泉のすぐ隣の若宮地区にも杏の産地があります。千曲川の川辺、戸隠山と良い図な山の背景で、負けないぐらいな景色です。なおかつ、温泉街から歩いて行ける距離です。

杏宝園の金子さんに連れて頂いて、彼らの作っている商品を見たり、そして畑の方に案内して頂きました。

この冬はふだんより寒かったせいか、今年の杏の花は１～２週間遅れているようです。４月１０日あたりかな？写真の様に、蕾さえまだ出ていません。

杏宝園は活発的にあんずの商品や栽培を開発しています。彼らのHPによると、

平成23年11月に6次産業に認定されました。
杏宝園では規定の農薬より濃度を薄めて散布し、化学肥料も少量にして自然堆肥を活用し栽培しています。

土壌の浄化を考えて炭も使用しています。

杏宝園のオリジナル商品はすべて自家農園で育ったあんずを使用しているので安心、安全です。

あんずの種類も多種類栽培しています。」

応援したい農家です。杏宝園のあんずコンフィチュールや半ドライアプリコットお土産を亀清旅館で扱う予定でございます。

Chikuma City and our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada are proud of our Mori "Anzu-no-Sato" Apricot Village. This district is Japan's largest producer of apricots.

Actually though, right here next to Togura-Kamiyamada is another apricot growing area, Wakamiya. Located along the Chikuma River with Togakushi and Iizuna Mountains in the background, Wakamiyama makes for a beautiful setting in its own rite to see apricot blossoms. And, it's a short enough distance to walk from the onsen town.

One of the growers, Kaneko-san of Kyouhouen, gave me a tour of their facilities, including a taste of many of their apricot products, as well as their apricot orchards.

Usually the apricot trees bloom in the beginning of April. However, due to the colder than usual winter we've been having, look for the blossoms to start around April 10th. As you can see by the picture, the buds haven't even started to form yet.

Kyouhouen prides itself in using as minimal as possible chemical pesticides and maximizing natural fertilizers. They are proactive in developing new varieties of apricots, and are busy working on many exciting products using their fruit.

Here at Kamesei, we are scheduled to offer their apricot confiture as well as their half-dried apricots.

This April, do come see Mori's "Apricot Village", but also come and enjoy the apricot blossoms at Kyouhouen's orchard. Ask us at Kamesei and we will gladly explain the way.

亀清旅館のKURA雑誌デビュー　Kamesei Ryokan's KURA Debut

KURAという雑誌は「信州を愛する大人の情報誌」というテーマです。長野県の生活、歴史、グルメ、景色、街並み等を紹介する雑誌。２０１２年４月号（３月２０日発売；カバーストーリ「城下町の桜とスイーツ」）に亀清旅館の新しく出来た貸切露天風呂「しなの風呂」が載っています。

「手仕事の信州」、「信州の酒文化」、「実りの信州」、「温泉王国信州へ」などの特集でKURAが長野県の良い所ばかり紹介している。信州を代表する雑誌である。

亀清旅館の宿つくりの中で、「いつかKURAに載れたらいいな」というのが私の夢でした。１２月に完成した「しなの風呂」のお蔭でその夢は実現が出来ました。

KURA magazine bills itself as the "Source of Information for People that Love Nagano Prefecture". Its feature stories cover Nagano lifestyle, history, gourmet, scenery, townscapes and more. The April 2012 issue (on sale March 20th, Cover Story: "Castle Town Cherry Blossoms and Pastries") has a blurb on Kamesei Ryokan's new "Shinano-buro" family bath.

With feature articles like "Nagano's Sake Culture", "Nagano Fruits", "Onsen Paradise, Nagano", etc., KURA is the most definitive magazine about Nagano Prefecture.

Ever since I started making improvements here at Kamesei Ryokan, it has been my dream to one day have our inn be featured in KURA magazine. Thanks to our new Shinano Bath, my dream has been realized!

2012.03.19: 温泉タウン戸倉上山田 Onsen Town Togura-Kamiyamada

戸倉上山田温泉の上の山城「荒砥城」にシアトルから遊びに来ているパパを連れて行きました。周辺の侍の歴史を説明したら、興味津々でした。やはり、日本のお城は人気があるね。

温泉街の近くに荒砥城があって、嬉しいです。戦国時代からの山城で形として残っているのこの荒砥城だけです。歴史やその時代の生活を学べるし、尚且つお城からの景色が最高です。千曲川を見下ろして、善光寺平や周辺の山々を眺める。そして、戦国時代の伝説の村上義清、武田信玄、上杉謙信の戦いしたところも見える。未だにそのころから残された地名があり、見晴らし台から見ながら侍の皆の動きを想像できます。

荒砥城。日本の侍のファンの皆さんにお勧め。うちのパパも大喜び。

Above our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, we are fortunate to have a mountain fortress, Arato-jo. My dad is here visiting, so I took him up to see the fort. He found the samurai history of the area fascinating, and it was a great chance to see a little of what life was like during Japan's Warring States era.

Arato-jo's lookout provides a panoramic view of the Chikuma River valley and the surrounding mountains. This area hosted numerous samurai confrontations, and many of the place names relate to those battles. Seeing it all from Arato-jo gives a deep sense of the area's history.

飯山なら本多うなぎ Iiyama's Destination Unagi (Eel) Restaurant: Honda

随分前に飯山市を通った時に、旅館組合の先輩が連れてくれたレストランはうなぎ屋さん「本多」でした。従って、「飯山なら本多」というイメージがある。色々な人に聞けば、明治37年から始まった本多はやはり有名らしい。

飯山の知り合いによると、市の役場の近辺なので政治家が良く食べに来るそうです。本多の個室で色々な重要なお話が行われているでしょう。第2役場って感じ。

今回はアメリカから遊びに来てくれている両親と一緒に飯山に行ったが、お昼は本多に連れて行きました。親にはうなぎデビューでした。喜んでくれました。

本多は決して安くはない（一人3000円前後）ですが、言わせて頂けたらその分の価値がある。予約なくても行けるけど、あった方がスムーズ。

Way back when, I accompanied some of my 'senpai' (elders) from the ryokan association to the northern tip of Nagano Prefecture. When we passed through Iiyama City, they took me to Honda, an unagi (eel) restaurant. So I always had the image that "When in Iiyama, Honda's is the place to eat".

And after asking around to a lot of different people, everyone says Honda's, established in 1904, is famous. One guy who lives in Iiyama told me that with its location in close proximity to City Hall, many politicians go there to eat also. I can only imagine the kind of discussions that go on in Honda's private rooms. Honda's is apparently like a second city hall.

So when I took my parents who are here visiting from the States for a drive to Iiyama, I took them to Honda's for lunch. It was my parents' first time to eat eel. They loved it!

Honda's is a bit pricey (around 3000 yen per person) but, if you ask me, is definitely worth it. You don't need reservations to eat there, but it definitely makes things smoother as the grilling process is a slow procedure.

飯山市にある高橋人形館は行った事がありますか？北信の割りと新しい観光スポットです。去年の5月に亀清の若女将と若若女将と初めて行きましたが、高橋さんの作る人形は「あんな顔な人がいるよ！」と田舎を思い出す。

私は日本の田舎がないのに、私も見て笑います。

その人形館にキルトを作る私の母にも見せたかったので、連れて行ってきました。想像した通り、母も大喜びでした。

またもう一つな親孝行の夢は実現が出来ました。

Have you ever been to the Mayumi Takahashi Doll Museum in Iiyama City? It is one of Northern Nagano's newest tourist destinations. I went there last May with Kamesei's proprietress and our daughter. Takahashi-san's dolls are priceless with their facial expressions and depiction of life in the Japanese countryside.

Even though I grew up in America and have no intrinsic nostalgia for Japan's rural life, I still find the dolls entertaining.

And with my parents here visiting from Seattle, I really wanted to take my Mom to see the dolls, too. So we hopped in the car with the kids and went for a drive to see the museum. Mom loved it!

Another 'filial piety' success.

長野市の北野美術館と北野カルチュラルセンターから2012春のチラシが届きました。

北野カルチュラルセンター「ノスタルジック・シーン　～建物のある風景～」は4月22日まで

両館は善光寺平アートラインの加盟館です。東山魁夷館や水野美術館、須坂の田中本家、小布施の北斎館など全部で14施設の善光寺平アートラインはこの春こそ、美術館巡りをしたいですね。

The two facilities are members of the Zenkoji Plain Art Line. There are a total of 14 members, including the Higashiyama Kaii Museum, the Mizuno Art Museum, Suzaka City's Tanaka Honke and Obuse's Hokusai-kan. This spring would make a perfect time to tour these esteemed art museums.

東京にてのキャラバンの一時:

東京駅からS社へ行くのに「八重地下」ショッピング街を通りました。

地下のショッピング街。

距離は分からなかったけど１ｋｍ近くあったのではないか。
方向も分からず、信号がないから何ブロック歩いたかも分からない。

モグラもこんな感覚なのかなと思った。

やっと外に出て、O.雑誌の編集さん達と打ち合わせしてもう一度地下に入りました。しかし、今回は混んでいるショッピング街ではなくて「旬味」というお洒落なレストラン。

スタッフの深いおじぎ、
とにかくキャラバンの走りから離れて、ゆっくりで美味しくて食事をとれました。

こういう為に日本に来ました。

On this recent marketing "caravan" trip to Tokyo, I had the following experience.

Our group walked from Tokyo Station to the office of Oz magazine. Instead of walking the surface streets, we went through the "Yaechika" underground shopping mall. Being that it was underground, there was no sense of direction or distance -- just a kilometer or so of shop after shop and endless side passages.

I got the sensation that this is what moles must feel like.

After popping back up and visiting the magazine's editors, we went back underground again. But this time not to another crazy shopping center, but to a restaurant. A quiet, classy restaurant. With soft lighting and deep bows by the staff. A place for a moment to get away from the frenzied pace of the marketing tour.

It is for moments like this that I came to Japan.

How travel agents see Nagano

業界の新聞で「全国トップ100温泉」などのリストは良く出ます。戸倉上山田温泉のピーク（30～40年前）のころは上順位だったらしいです。最近はリストに載る程な知名度じゃない現状です。何とか認識度を高める為に私ども旅館組合のメンバーで宣伝キャラバンをやっています。

先週は私を入れて5人で名古屋を回って、今回は東京・大宮へ10人ぐらいで二班で回りました。テレビ局、新聞、雑誌、旅行会社、案内所、次から次へ顔を出して、最新情報をお伝えしました。

旅行会社の「長野」資料を見たら良く分かりましたが、温泉で言えば渋・湯田中、松本のあさま温泉、別所、昼神温泉が代表となっています。戸倉上山田はお湯が良いし、沢山の楽しい飲食店・専門店（射的も！）があるし、芸者文化、周辺の山・川風情があって、とっても良い温泉なのでこれからも全面的にPRしたいと思います。

Travel industry newspapers in Japan often have "Top 100 Onsens" lists. During Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's heydays 30-40 years ago, we were listed near the top. Now, however, we just don't have the name recognition to make the cut. In order to raise awareness about our onsen, members of the ryokan association periodically make sales 'caravan' trips.

Last week, 5 fellow innkeepers and I drove to Nagoya for a series of sales calls. This time around, ten of us headed to Tokyo and Omiya for 2 days of marketing. TV stations, newspapers, travel guides, information centers, travel agencies -- a whirlwind tour.

One thing I realized from seeing the "Nagano" literature from the travel agencies is that the prefecture's most well-known onsen areas are Shibu-Yudakana, Asama (Matsumoto), Bessho and Hirugami. I will try my hardest to get Togura-Kamiyamada added to that list!

お月様と春雪 Spring Snow and the Moon

今朝に起きて外に見たら、中庭、屋根、周辺の山々、すべてが真っ白でした。２０ｃｍぐらいの雪でした。しかし、3月の雪はすぐ溶けます。

パーフェクトな雪景色に真っ青の空にお月様。最高に綺麗な景色な日。

皆さん、楽しんでください。私は戸倉上山田温泉の宣伝キャラバンで東京へお出かけします。

Woke up this morning to the stunning sight of fresh snow covering Kamesei's naka-niwa garden, the roofs, the nearby hills -- everything was blanketed in beautiful snow. About 20cm of the white stuff.

Unfortunately, snow this time of year doesn't stick around for very long. But while it's here, with the turquoise blue sky and the moon shining down, it makes for an amazingly beautiful sight.

I hope everyone in Nagano takes the time to appreciate the beauty. For me, I'm off to Tokyo for 2 days of sales promoting our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada.
