夕べのお客様はいきなり「杏狩りしに行きたい」と言い出した。夕方5時半でした。杏農家の皆様はその時間帯がもうおしまい。

残念?いいえ。我が亀清旅館に2年前に植えた杏の木があって、実は少しなっていましたので、お客様を案内しました。「一本の気だけですが…」と言ったら、「それで良いです。杏の実は見た事がないから。どうなっているか見てみたい」と言われました。

まあ、小さい事でしたが、お客様は初めて杏のみを見て、初めて「採りたて」で食べました。庭師の岡田さんの植えた杏の木は昔からの種類で、実は「尼酸っぱい」と言うより、ただの「酸っぱい」って感じ。どちらかと言うと、ジャム作りに最適。個人的には私が好きですが、お客さんに最近の種類、甘い「ハーコート」の方が良かったかもしれない。

Last night, our guests suddenly declared that they wanted to go pick apricots. At 5:30pm. Umm, all of the apricot orchardists are done for the day.

But never fear, Kamesei Ryokan is here! 2 years ago, our gardener planted an apricot tree for us. It actually was bearing a bit of fruit, so I took the guests to see it. It was their first time to see apricots in anything other than a jar of jam, so they were pretty excited.

The variety that our gardener planted was an heirloom variety. A nice, tart (sour?) variety. Perfect for jam. I personally like the tartness, but I think our guests would have preferred a modern variety like the sweet Harcot.

観光の雑誌の世界は色々と変化してきています。インターネットの時代の中で雑誌の必要性がなくなっている一方、もう一方で無料雑誌が増えています。例えば、この夏からるるぶFREEの長野・善光寺版がデビューしたのは1つの例です。

有料の雑誌の存続が厳しくなってきた中で、じゃらん社が新しく「信州」と言う雑誌を出しました。るるぶFREEとか他の無料雑誌と比較したら、中身がかなり濃くて、地元中心の情報です。考えてみれば、当たり前です。無料の雑誌の場合、お金さえあればのっけてもらえる。つまり、スポンサー制。「地元で人気店が載っていない；どうかと思われる店ばかり」の様な内容が多い。

じゃらん「信州」の戸倉上山田の紹介では、お客様が実際に喜ばれている穴場的な情報がしっかり入っている。「島屋」甘露煮専門店の鮎甘露煮から大勝館の大衆演劇まで、射的やおしぼりうどんなどなど。逆に、紹介してもらいたくないラーメン屋さんも載っている：大黒屋はこれ以上人気になってしまえば混んでいて入れなくなってしまう。

その「地元の事が詳しい」秘密はじゃらんの現地スタフが内容を提供しているから。例えば、じゃらんネットの戸倉上山田温泉担当が周辺に住んでいて、なおかつ我々旅館の経営者と随時に打ち合わせしているから、どこが喜ばれているか詳しい訳です。

そして、宿の紹介はじゃらん独特のじゃらんネットクチコミ4.5以上の4件が紹介されています。お金を出してのっけてかくて駄目な訳。お陰様で亀清旅館も載っております。口コミ総合4.6（夕食は何と4.9!）という事。

もう既に、それを見てお越しになったお客様もいらっしゃいました。長野の観光情報はじゃらん「信州」をお勧め。

The sightseeing guide industry is facing tough times. On one hand, so much info is now available on the internet. On the other hand, there has a boom in free magazines lately. For example, popular 'Rurubu' guide just this summer released a free Zenkoji / Northern Nagano edition.

How can the for-purchase magazines survive? One new challenger has come on the scene this summer: Jalan's "Shinshu" (Nagano) magazine. Compared to the free magazines with biased content (places featured don't have to be good, they just have to have the money to buy advertising) and internet sites with questionable reliability, Jalan's magazine is full of detailed, useful content.

For example, for the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen area, the restaurant that serves the hottest version of our local noodle specialty 'oshibori udon' as well as a very unassuming marinated fish shop are featured. Not exactly sexy, touristy places, but shops that us locals cherish. Jalan also featured one of our local ramen shops which really bothers me -- if Daikokuya gets any more popular, I'll never be able to get a seat in there.

What's Jalan's secret for providing such insider knowledge? Simple -- their local representatives provide the details. Our onsen's local rep lives in the vicinity and is in constant contact with us ryokan owners, so she knows what is popular and what's not.

And regarding Jalan's Shinshu magazines listings for accommodations, they feature establishments with the highest customer satisfaction ratings from their reservation website. That assures the best selection of inns. For Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, that includes us, Kamesei Ryokan!

So if you're looking for a tourism guide for Nagano, skip the free mags and get Jalan's "Shinshu".

太陽様が起きたばかり。

遠くから光速度おるの車の音が流れてくるし、電車がたまに通りますが、その量音は鳥の鳴き声の歌に負けます。

これは朝5時座禅＠開眼寺。

昨日は息子達と頑張って、早く起きて、開眼寺へお出かけしました。座禅は本当にどこでも、いつでもできるのですが、開眼寺の座禅堂で信州の最も静かの朝5時でやるのは最適です。

今回は久しぶりに行きましたが、この夏は夏休みで「若旦那と朝5時座禅プラン」で既に予約は入っています。これからは何度も開眼寺にお世話名なりそうです。

The sun has just woken up.

Birds are singing their morning serenade, their chirping drowning out the distant sounds of the freeway and the occasional train going by.

This is Nagano at 5am. Nagano at its most still. The perfect time for zazen meditation. And the perfect place is Kaigen-Ji Temple's zazen room.

While zazen can be done anywhere, any time, doing it in the quietness of 5am at Kaigen-ji just feels so right.

Yesterday morning I took our 2 sons for meditation. It was my first time this summer. Like anything else, meditation takes practice. We already have reservations for our "5am zazen with the Proprietor" plan coming up for summer vacation, so I am looking forward to more trips to Kaigen-ji soon.

開眼寺(Tel 026-272-5019)は千曲市の桑原地区にあります。信州お寺巡りの13番。歴史的の本堂の隣に、モダンな座禅堂がある。住職の柴田さんは毎朝5時に座禅をやっているので、自由参加です。
亀清旅館の若旦那の私も座禅が好きで、時々に柴田さん・開眼寺にお世話になります。我が宿の宿泊者で、行きたい方がいらっしゃれば、喜んでご一緒に行きます。

Kaigen-ji Temple (tel# 026-275-5019) is located in Chikuma City's Kuwabara district, approx. 15 minutes by car from Kamesei. It is #13 on the Nagano Temple Pilgrimage route. Next to the historical main building is a modern zazen room. The head monk, Shibata-san, does meditation their every morning at 5am. I, the proprietor of Kamesei Ryokan, practice meditation and every once in a while go to Kaigen-ji. For guests of our inn that wish to go, I would love to take you!

戸倉上山田温泉は冠着山の麓で、千曲川沿いにあります。夏は太陽さんが沈み始まる時、まずは冠着山の裏に隠れます。そして、一度は山の方に顔を出してから、完全に沈みます。

その山と太陽の合わせのお蔭かどうか分かりませんが、時々にものすごく赤くてきれいなサンセットになります。夕べはそういう日でした。戸倉上山田温泉の上の雲が赤く光っていて、綺麗でした。

During the summer months here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, the sun takes a mischevious path as it sets. Just to the west of our onsen town is Kamuriki Mountain, towering 880 meters above the Chikuma River and our town nestled here along the river banks.

As the sun sets, it first ducks behind Kamuriki Mountain, but then makes a quick appearance above the mountain's northern shoulder before retiring for the night. I am not sure if it because of this unique dance with the mountain or not, but the setting sun often creates the most brilliant red sunsets in the sky above Togura-Kamiyamada.

Last night was such a night. Here are a few pictures. I'm afraid they don't do the colors justice.

先日の茨城への旅である宿のロビーにピアノが置いてありました。「あっ、亀清旅館みたい」と思いました。

「触れないでください」というカードが付いていた。

えっ、亀清と違うね。我がロビーのピアノは是非にお客さん達に弾いて欲しいです。そのためにロビーに置いてある。

「触れてください」という事を書くべきかな？

One of the inn's I visited on this recent trip to Ibaraki Prefecture had a piano in the lobby. I thought, "Ahh, similar to our lobby at Kamesei Ryokan."

But it had a card on it: "Please do not touch."

Hmm, that's very different from Kamesei's piano. We love to have our guests play the piano. That's why we have it in our lobby!

Maybe I need to put a sign on Kamesei's piano: "Please DO touch."

夕べは旅館青年部の集まりで茨城県の筑波山温泉に泊まりました。朝は少し余裕があったからケーブルカーに乗って、筑波山の山頂まで行ってみました。晴れている日なら、東京のスカイツリーが見れるそうですが、今日は雲の中だったせいで、数メーター先のブナの木さえ見えなかった。

帰りはロープウィーで降りて、そして１時間ぐらいのハイクで温泉に戻りました。

「西は富士山、東は筑波山」と言われる割に、立派なケーブルカーもロープウェーもある割に、雄大な神社があるのに、観光客が少なかった。平日だったせいか、頂上に人間よりお土産屋さんの数が多かった。

戸倉上山田の温泉つくりの議論の中で、「隣に目玉な観光スポットがあればいいのに…」とよく聞きます。筑波山温泉の隣に筑波山とのケーブルカーなどの名所があるのに、観光客が少ない。温泉実態の魅力を磨く必要があること、改めて思いました。

やはり、違う温泉地へ行けば、沢山の刺激になります。勉強中の青い目の若旦那でございます。

In conjunction with the ryokan junior association's big get-together in Ibariki, all the participants stayed at Tsukubasan Onsen. In the morning, I had a bit of free time, so I rode the cable car to the summit of the onsen's namesake Tsukubasan Mountain.

In spite of being known as the Eastern counterpart to Western Japan's Mount Fuji, and despite having not only a cool cable car but an awe-inspiring ropeway gondola lift as well, there were surpringly few tourists. In fact, at the summit, there were more souvenir stands that tourists. Maybe it was because of being a weekday, or maybe it was due to the foggy conditions (I could barely see a beech tree a few meters away, let alone Sky Tree in Tokyo).

Nevertheless, it made me realize that onsen areas like Togura Kamiyamada can't just rely on having a tourist destination nearby. We have to build on the attractiveness of our town itself.

Taking a trip to another onsen district can be very inspiring!

旅館青年部の北関信越ブロック大会の為に、茨城県に行きました。３月末で行う予定だったが、3.11地震のせいで延期になった。この２年間で蔵元ブロック長(akaブロック王）に大変お世話になったので、恩返し参加しました。

泊は筑波山温泉で、夜の懇親会で私が女子プロレスのマネジャーになったがその話はまた違う記事に。(また違うブログで。）それは別として、目玉のイベントはカート大会＠つくばサーキット。長野の全部会長の宮原さん(写真左下)が元プロのドリキ(ドリフトキング）の土屋ドライバーを呼んで、コースの走り方を教えていただきました。(真似が出来る訳無い！)

旅館青年部の仲間と良い経験！宿経営の苦労の中で、たまにこういうレジャーも必要。蔵元様、有難うございました！

The Northern Kanto / Niigata / Nagano Block of the Ryokan Junior Association held a major gathering at Ibaraki Prefecture. It was scheduled to take place in March, but got delayed due to the 3.11 earthquake disaster.

At night, we stayed at a ryokan at Tsubasan Onsen. During the ensuing banquet, I became the manager for a ladies pro wrestling team. That will have to be the subject of another blog entry. Just not on this blog!

Anyways, the main event of the gathering was go-cart racing at Tsukuba Circuit. A pro driver showed us some techniques, and we all got a chance to drive on the racing track.

My Dad always told me, one has to work hard, but also play hard. Along with my fellow junior innkeepers, I certainly took care of the latter today.

姨捨駅リニュアルオープン：7月24日 Obasute Station's Renewal Open Set For 24-July

この春から姨捨駅の駅舎はずっと改造工事中でした。駅舎の分の工事は大分終わって、今は歩道橋が綺麗に改造されている。その工事の全ては7月24日（日）まで完成の予定だそうです。なぜなら、その日は「姨捨駅舎リニューアル記念セレモニー開催」です。12：10から始まる予定で、ＪＲのえらいさんたち及び千曲市の市長や、この戸倉上山田温泉からの冠着太鼓など、くす玉開花の開催など、とにかく盛り上がる予定でございます。

今回のリニューアルセレモニーの目玉改造工事は駅の事務室が整備された事です。「無人駅になぜ事務室が必要か」と思われるかもしれないが、その理由は事務室が「くつろぎの駅」になり、「おばすて　くつろぎの駅友の会」の方々がボランティアーでお茶を出したり、周辺の観光案内をしたりする訳です。

7月24日に姨捨駅リニューアルで是非ご一緒に大騒ぎしましょう!

Chikuma City's pride and joy Obasute Station has been under construction getting a face lift since the start of spring. The station house is pretty much finished, and now the footbridge is getting touched up.

Everything will be wrapped up by 24-July, or it had better be because that's when JR is holding an official ceremony to commemorate the station's renewal open. JR big wigs will be there along with Chikuma City's mayor and our local Kamuriki Taiko from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen.

The main part of this restoration is the depot's office. It has been refinished into a 'kutsurogi-no-eki' -- a Relaxation Station. Some may wonder why an unmanned station needs an office. But some local volunteers have agreed to offer tea service at the office.

So come and help celebrate the grand re-opening of Obasute Station on July 24th.

千曲川のつけばに訪ね Visiting one of the Chikuma River Tsukeba fish shacks

この時期の千曲川はいつも鮎釣りのおじさん達の姿で落ち着いた雰囲気になります。今年は梅雨の雨で流されたり、鵜で食われたりのせいか、鮎の数が例年より少ないそうです。従って、鮎釣りの方も少ない。ちょっとさびしい。

しかし、この頃は川にその独特の長い竿で友釣りしている方の姿は見えてきましたから、鮎の数が安定してきたかな?

先日は子供達を連れて、我が亀清旅館が付き合っているつけばに自転車で行きました。川辺の景色で、涼しい風、つけばののんびりの雰囲気が大好きです。私がオヤジになったら、夏の長い日々をこういう所で過ごせたら幸せ。

つけばは料理専門と、釣り専門の2種類があります。もし釣り専門のに興味があれば、坂城のマルケンさんがお勧めです。電話番号が0268-82-2243、遠山さんです。

This time of the year, the Chikuma River takes on a unique look as the fishermen wade into the river and use their amazingly long rods to fish for ayu. This year, however, the ayu population has been depleted by tsuyu (rainy-season) swollen currents as well as hungry cormorants. But lately I've started to see a few fishermen in the river, so perhaps the ayu presence has stabilized.

Yesterday, I took our kids for a bike ride along the river to visit one of the fishing shacks. I love the laid back feel of these 'tsukeba' shacks where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the riverside scene and the cool breeze.

There are 2 types of tsukeba: fishing shacks like this one, and ones that serve multi-course ayu cuisine. If you are interested in checking out one of the fishing tsukeba, Kamesei's favorite is Maruken in neighboring Sakaki Town. Call 0268-82-2243 and say 'moshi-moshi' to Toyama-san.

我が亀清旅館の玄関の前に、この一本のクロマツがあります。夕べに泊まったお客様は毎年にこの松の木の剪定をしてくれる庭師達でした。宴会の時に挨拶をしに行ったら、その庭師の親分が亀清との出会いを話してくれました：

若旦那が来る前に、我々は違う宿の庭で仕事をしていた。いつも亀清を見たら、「立派な松だな」と思いました。「誰でも剪定しても立派な気だ」と。そして、亀清の大女将が声をかけてくれて、亀清の仕事をするようになった。昔はそれぞれの宿は廊下があって、両側に庭があった様な作りでした。あれから皆がその木造な建物を壊して、鉄筋・コンクリートの箱を作ってしまった。昔からの作りを残しているのは亀清ぐらい。

と、褒めて頂きました。

私も、このクロマツが立派だと思っています。その横のでかい鉄の看板は邪魔と思って、去年の秋に木の看板を作って設置しました。いつかはその鉄の看板を取り外したいと思っています。庭師達に鉄の看板の事を聞いたら、やはり邪魔だと同意見でした。

とにかく、亀清の顔のクロマツをこれからも大事にしたい。

At Kamesei Ryokan's entrance is this 'kuromatsu' Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii Parl.). Last night, the gardeners who give this tree its yearly trim stayed at our inn. When I stopped by their banquet to greet them, the old boss told the story of how he came to work on our pine tree:

"Back in the old days, I used to work on the garden of a nearby inn. Every time I passed by Kamesei, I would think, 'Wow, what a spectacular pine tree. It has such a classical shape, any gardener would want to work with it.' And by happenstance, one day Kamesei's old proprietress asked me to do its trimming.
Back then, all the inns had passageways with gardens on either side. Since then, they've been replaced by multi-story steel-concrete boxes. Kamesei's the only one with the classic inn's layout left."

I, too, like the pine tree. Last fall, I made the wooden sign to complement it, and will eventually remove the steel one. The gardeners agreed -- the steel sign is in the way of the pine tree.
