今日の午後２：４０頃に東北中心で8.9mの地震がありました。戸倉上山田温泉は揺れたけどダメージはなかった。東北のみ何のためにお祈りしています。
旅館業では、一方で長野県旅館青年部の部会長から「週明けに長野県救援隊出動する」と言う積極的なメッセージが入り、もう一方でこちらですでにキャンセルの連絡が入ってきた。

No signs!
以前にも書きましたが、今は戸倉上山田温泉・千曲市のサイクリング・ハイキングマップ作成に入っています。出版社と協力して、私達の足で紹介するコースを確認のために通る作業しています。アホでも分かるかどうか、チェックしています。下手に案内して、人が道迷ったら大騒ぎになるので、それがない様にと。
それで、良く分かってきましたが、千曲市の中でも案内看板があるとない地域がある。
先週は子供達を連れて、桑原地区の上の佐野不動滝のハイキングしました。初めて行ったところでしたが、道の所々に小さな看板がありました。「佐野不動滝、何km」って。そのお蔭で、道を舞寄らないで、ハイキング口にちゃんと付きました。
それと比較すれば、昨夜はこの上山田の地元のお岩井堂山と言う山の登り口を確認しました。私自身は登った事があるし、地元だし、それでも登り口は分かりつらかった。案内看板は一つもなくて、難しかった。
マップ作りは良いけど、もしかしたら道の案内看板つくりから始まった方が良いかもしれない。まあ、それは次の課題として。
As I previously mentioned, right now I am in the middle of making a hiking / cycling map for Togura Kamiyamada Onsen and Chikuma City. The publisher and I have been going around and verifying with our own eyes (and feet) the various courses. We want to make sure each course is entirely idiot-proof.
One thing I have come to realize in working on this is that even within Chikuma City, some districts have great road signs, and others simply stink.
Last weekend I took our kids for a hike to the Sano Fudo Falls above the Kuwabara district. It was my first time to that area, but thanks to the little roadside signs, I found the way through the confusing maze of narrow roads to the trailhead.
On the other hand, last night I went to verify the trailhead for Iwaido-san here in Kamiyamada. Not only have I climbed this mountain, but it's in my own 'backyard'. Even with that, I had a hard time finding the location. There wasn't a single sign.
It made me realize that civic improvement needs to start with the basics, like street signs!
Rotisserie Chicken Served with a Smile
Facebook友に教えてもらった： 上田市本町のAnniversary 3号店での丸焼きチキン。我が娘、美咲ちゃんの早い誕生日お祝いでさっそく行きました。久しぶりのローストチキンで最高に美味しかった！なおかつ、スタッフの元気な笑顔は思い出になる。
以前はAnniversary 1号店に行きました。しのちゃんのフレアーコックテールや展示されているランボルギーニは一生忘れられない。これで３号店のファンにもなりました。今度は２号店を探さんとあかん。
３号店は上田市本町の「極楽横丁」にある。飲食店３７店を紹介するガイドもある。こんなに楽しいガイドは久しぶりです。お店の説明文で「居酒屋です。普通です。」から「若けぇ奴らにゃたまらんクラブ。坂井のり子はいない。念の為。」までの楽しい文章。ちなみに、Anniversary 3号店は「こんなお店を待ってました。ノリの良さは天下一品！」という。納得です。
上田城の桜は来月咲きますが、花見のついでに本町横町へどうぞ。
I heard from one of my Facebook friends about Anniversary #3 in Ueda City's Honmachi district. They serve rotisserie chicken. Do you know how long it's been since I've had rotisserie chicken? I used the excuse of an early birthday celebration for our daughter Misaki to take the family there.
It turns out this restaurant has one of only a dozen or so rotisserie roasters in the whole country. I was one pleased chicken eater. But even more memorable than the chicken was the friendliness of the waitstaff. I should have expected that. We had been to Anniversary #1 before, and besides the cool Lamborghini parked in the entrance, Shino-chan's flair cocktail demonstration was something I will never forget. That Anniversary group knows how to entertain.
Speaking of entertaining, there is a Honmachi Gokuroku ('Land of Happiness') Yokocho ('side street') restaurant guide featuring 37 different establishments, including Anniversary #3. What, you mean your town doesn't have a Land of Happiness side street? Well then, you'll just have to come to Ueda's.
Next month, the cherry trees at Ueda Castle will be in bloom. Come see them and then head over to Honmachi for some entertaining eats!

志賀高原での会議後、渋湯田中温泉の「よろづや」と言う長野（日本？）を代表できる旅館に泊まりした。朝の露天風呂の様子です。
この湯気と言え、行燈と言え、贅沢な広さの露天風呂…これはジャパンだ！
After the recent ryokan junior association meeting at Shiga Kogen, we all spent the night in Shibu Yudanaka Onsen at Yorozuya, one of Nagano's (Japan's?) best ryokans.
This is a picture of the open air bath outside of Yorozuya's nationally renowned Momoyama bath. With the steam raising up and the andon lanterns -- this is Cool Japan!

Shiga Kogen Nature Center
「信州」と言えば、「自然」。
「自然」と言えば、志賀高原！
志賀高原は冬のスキーにしても、夏のハイキングにしても、その大自然を感動しながら楽しめます。長野県の中でも、立派の山と深い森、そして地獄谷のスノーモンキーを始め沢山の動物、鳥、獣が沢山います。
志賀高原の自然との触れあい方を詳しく説明するのは：
長野県・志賀高原自然保護センター志賀高原の蓮池地区にある98センターの中です。山と人の歴史、木の種類、動物情報はもちろん、ハイキングコースの紹介もある。志賀高原の自然を楽しみ始まる時に、寄ってみる価値があると思います。
同じ建物中にオリンピック記念館もあります。1998年の冬オリンピックのＡｌｐｉｎｅイベントが志賀高原で行われました。そのころからの聖火、ピンバッジなどのアイテムが沢山展示してあります。そのころからの五輪の迫力を再度感じれます。
昨日は長野県旅館青年部の理事会で行ってきましたので初めて両館を見ました。興味のある方は是非！

People come to Nagano from far and wide to enjoy its natural beauty. And within Nagano, it doesn't get much better than Shiga Kogen. With its majestic mountains and deep forests, not to mention the famous snow monkeys and other wildlife, Shiga Kogen's wilderness is sure to delight your senses and instill a sense of awe.
Whether it is skiing in the winter, or hiking in the 'green season', Shiga Kogen is full of ways to get out and enjoy nature. In fact, the highlands are so extensive, it is hard to know where to start. Luckily, inside the 98 Center at Hatsuike Pond there is the Nagano Prefecture Shiga Kogen Nature Conservation Center. Its displays show the various types of flora and fauna that can be found in Shiga, as well as descriptions of human interaction with the mountains over the years. A three dimensional map gives you an overhead view of the area and an idea of where the various areas are in relation to each other. The center also contains a wealth of information on hiking trails and how best to enjoy the mountains.
In the same building as the Nature Center is the Olympic Memorial Hall. Shiga Kogen was the host of several alpine events during the 1998 Winter Olympics. Memorabilia from the events is on display in the hall. Here you can relive the excitement of the Nagano Games.
Yesterday I attended a Nagano Ryokan Junior Association meeting at Shiga Kogen and got to see the Nature Center and Olympics Hall for the first time. I also got to ride a special snow taxi -- just one of the many ways to enjoy Shiga Kogen.

我々上山田神楽保存会は昨日、戸倉上山田温泉にある「アットホーム」と言う老人ホームに呼ばれて、獅子舞をやりました。笑顔が広がれて、良かったです。
老人ホームに行く度に、人生の先の事をいつも考えてしまう。自分はどんな終わり方になるのかな？
まあ、月曜日の朝からその思い考えは良いとして、取り敢えずは生きている間に毎日毎日は良い結果を出していく事！
14-meter tall Sano Fudo Falls
戸倉上山田温泉から車で２０分ぐらい、千曲市桑原地区の上に佐野薬師と言うお寺があります。佐野薬師から佐野不動滝までの簡単な0.9ｋｍハイキングコースがあります。
昨日は子供達を連れて、雪が少し残っているこの遅い冬のちょっとしたハイキングしました。天気が良かったし、運動にもなるし、不動滝のマイナスイーオンを吸いたかったし、ちょうど良かったです。
桑原地区から「佐野薬師」への矢印を追いかけながら迷いながら何とか薬師と佐野池に着きました。善光寺平と遠くの雪かばっている菅平の眺めが綺麗でした。
佐野薬師からハイキングの道は軽トラ用な林道から始まりました。途中で狼の足跡しかない静かな細い道になりまして、沢を渡って松の林に入って、ちょっとした登り坂を超えたら3歳の美咲ちゃんにちょうどいい大きさの段が付いている下り坂を下りた。一番下まで行ったら、例の不動滝。
もしくは、冷の不動滝。夏ならこの高さ14ｍの滝から出る冷気が涼しくていいでしょう。冬は周りが凍っていて、幻な風情になっていました。

20 minutes by car from our onsen town Togura Kamiyamada is Chikuma City's Kuwabara district. In the hills above Kuwabara is a quaint little temple called Sano Yakushi, and it is situated by a tiny pond with a view that overlooks the Zenkoji Plain below and Sugadaira Mountains in the distance. A short, 0.9km hike from the temple takes you to the Sano Fudo Falls.
Yesterday, I went with our kids to go on the hike to the falls. We took advantage of a sunny late winter day and the hike was a perfect excuse to get out and stretch our legs and enjoy the fresh air.
The path starts out as a road for those ubiquitous kei (light) pick up trucks and, sure enough, we soon passed some terraced rice fields. It always amazes me the extremes Japanese farmers go to for carving out farmland in the the wilderness. After passing the last fields, the path becomes a proper hiking trail. And a rather quiet one at that. We had only the paw prints of a fox to follow along the trail.
After crossing a glen, the trail enters a pine forest. After a short incline, there is a 3-way split: down for the waterfall, straight for a shrine to a forest deity, and up for some castle remains. The path down is equipped with Misaki-sized steps, so our 3-year old daughter had no problems.
At the bottom is what everyone comes to see: the 14-meter tall Sano Fudo Falls.

戸倉上山田温泉の周辺のビッグイベント：森「あんずの里」のあんずまつり。２０１１年は第５６回となります。今年の祭りのマップは発行されましてので、行く前に亀清に寄ってお持ちになってください。
まつりの花見の分は４月２日から４月１６日までの予定です。そして、信濃毎日新聞の開花予想では、今年が平年並みの４月７日だそうです。
このブログにも最新情報を提供する予定ですが、あんずまつりの公式情報は千曲市観光協会のＨＰへ。
Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's signature Springtime event is the Apricot Festival in Mori district's Anzu no Sato (Apricot Village). This year marks the 56th running.
Dates for the 2011 flower viewing are from April 2nd to April 16th. Peak blooms are expected to by around April 7th according the Shinmai, our local newspaper.

Hello, Setsubunso
戸倉駅の裏の戸倉宿キティーパークaka天狗公園は節分草と言う小さな可愛いらしい花で有名です。と言うか、節分草のファンの中で有名。大体春に雪が解けてきたら咲いてくるのでどうなっているか、見に行ってきました。
２０１１年の戸倉の節分草の現状は？写真通り、落ち葉からちょっとだけ頭が出は暇っている。今週末の天気は温かくなる予想だが、来週からまた寒くなって雪が降るそうです。従って、今年の節分草の咲きは恐らく１，２週間後かな？
また見て、報告します。
節分草の周辺に「天狗の松」と言うでかい松があります。４００年前からだそうです。この３０メータの高さの木は千曲市の指定文化財になっています。伝説によると、地元の山で修験していた三人兄弟が川の洪水で分かれて、それぞれ別なの山で籠った。三人共が天狗になり、地元の人間を守るようになったと言う。
こんな神秘的な天狗の松を見れば、なんとなく信じるようになる。

Above Togura Station, there is a park called Togurajuku Kitty Park. It is better known as Tengu Park, and one thing it is famous for is a nearby grouping of cute little setsubunsou flowers (Eranthis pinnatifida). Well, at least it's famous amongst fans of setsubunsou. Such fans come from far and wide in mid March to photograph the delicate little blossoms.
Today, I went to see if they were in bloom yet, as the snow in the nearby mountains is starting to melt. I found a few just starting to poke their heads out from under the fallen leaves. But after warm weather this weekend, we're supposed to have another chilly front come through. So the setsubunsou are probably still a week or so from being in their full photogenic form.
Nearby the setsubunsou area is a massive pine tree called the Tengu no Matsu (pine). The 30 meter tall tree is supposedly over 400 years old. According to legend, three brothers that were hermits in a nearby mountain became separated in a flood. One took up residence above Togura and was so honored by the locals that upon death became a Tengu.
After seeing the imposing size of the pine tree, one is almost led to believe in the spiritual origins of the tree!
So, come and check out the elusive Setsubunsou flowers as well as our mystical Tengu no Matsu pine tree.

Happy Girls Day to all you young (and young at heart) ladies out there. Here is our daughter Misaki posing with the Hina Dolls displayed in Kamesei's lobby. I'd like to take this opportunity to pass on some information about a few of the area's many Hina Doll related events.
'Burari' Northern Nagano Hina Tour
This is an event involving various Hina Doll displays along the Nagano Dentetsu Railway from Yashiro Station to Yudanaka Station. Besides a 'stamp rally', the event features a travelling 'relay' display of new dolls by local popular doll artist Mayumi Takahashi. Relay dates and locations are as below:

Original Hina Dolls made of local Matsushiro-yaki pottery will be featured.

Don't miss the 'Hina Ichi (Market)' festival. It takes place every year on March 31st and April 1st, and features clay dolls painted by local artists in a tradition that has been handed down over hundreds of years.
