千曲市在住の芸術家のアートショーは今週末に行う予定です。千曲アート協会「アートＮｏｗ２０１０」という展示会です。
この美術団体は２００９年に生まれて、今回の展示会が第２階だそうです。千曲市のアーティストの作品を見る大きなチャンスです。

千曲アート団体の中で亀清旅館が憧れているメンバーが多い:

森地区の杏の里の古民家をＲｅｓｃｕｅして、ギャラリーとして使っている版画家　森　獏朗　さん

ＪＣでお世話になっているフラワーアート作家　柿崎　順一さん

当団体のリーダー、稲荷山の陶芸家　近藤　しろう　さん

と、他に何人か、約２０人です。今回の展示会に参加しないそうですが、先日に行ったステンドグラスの山崎さんもメンバーだそうです。

私も期間中に行きますので、是非、千曲市の美術家・芸実家の作品を見るこの良いチャンスをミスしないでください。

Chikuma City's resident artists formed a group last year ('Chikuma Art Kyoukai'). This weekend they are putting on their 2nd annual art show "Art Now 2010" at Anzu Hall, our city's main event location. This is a great chance to see the works of our city's talented artists, many of which I have had the pleasure of meeting, including:

Fumio Wakabayashi (wood block print artist from right here in Kamiyamada Onsen)

Mori Bakuro (wood block print artist from Mori)

Junichi Kakizaki (flower modern art; my buddy from the JC's)

Kondo Shiro (ceramicist from Inariyama and the leader of this group)

and many more, a total of about 20 artists. Yamazaki-san, the stained glass artist the kids and I visited last week, is also a member but won't be exhibiting this time.

The show runs from 20-Nov (Sat) through 23-Nov (Tues) from 9am to 5pm. For more info, check out the website.

今日あたりが亀清旅館の庭の一番綺麗な紅葉の日です。中庭のモミジが真っ黄色、露天風呂の周りの雑木林が様々な色となっていて、特に、「鶴・亀」のモミジが最高な色になっている。ちょうど今が見事です。

今年のこの紅葉のピークが去年より少し遅れています。今年の夏が異常の暑かったです。冬はどうなるのでしょうか？もうすでにロビーに薪ストーブをガンガン使っています。ほんとは１２月に入ってから使いたかったけど、この頃はかなり冷えてきました。その分で、温泉は温かくて特に気持ちいい！

Today, Kamesei Ryokan's garden is at its peak for fall colors. The big maple next to our naka-niwa garden's koi pond has turned a brilliant shade of yellow, and the garden surrounding our outdoor bath is a collage of various autumn colors. Especially the Japanese maple that makes up the 'crane' part of our 'tsuru-kame' crane-turtle formation. Its leaves are the deepest shade of red they get right now.

This year's autumn foliage peak is a couple days later than last year's. We had record-breaking heat this summer, but already we're cranking up the wood stove in our ryokan's lobby, as cold temperatures have set in early. I wonder what kind of winter we are in store for. But cold weather like this makes a soak in the onsen that much better!

この間、お客さんに客室を案内した時に、部屋のベランダに何か光っている物が目にかかりました。あっ、かりんだ！知らない間に、亀清の若女将が親戚から頂いたかりんを客室に飾りました。良い香りもするし、冬を向かって日が短くなっていく中で、かりんの明るさが素晴らしいです。今年はお客さんから頂いた陶器に入れて、なお綺麗です。

When I brought some guests to their guestroom the other day, something in the sitting area caught my eye. Kamesei's proprietress had put some 'karin' (Japanese quince fruit that is common to the Nagano area) in a bowl and displayed it on the table in the room's 'veranda' area.

Karin give off such a lovely, delicate scent, and provide a welcome touch of color in this season as the sun gets lower and lower in the sky with the coming of winter.

亀清旅館のお客様が時々旅の本を渡して、サインとか宿のハンコをお願いしてきます。沢山の観光地で色々な宿に泊まっている方には、どこでどの宿かとの良い思い出になります。良い習慣（趣味？）だと思います。旅行者によって、かなりの数の宿に泊まっていらっしゃっているので、こういう本を使いながらきっと「あっ、そう言えば、その秋に戸倉上山田温泉の青い目の若旦那の宿に泊まってよね」とかお思い出しになるのかな？

Once in a while, a guest of ours at Kamesei Ryokan will hand us a scrapbook when they check in. They ask all of the inns and hotels they stay at from the various destinations they travel to, to write a little note and stamp their book with the inn's stamp.

I think that's a great hobby to have, and the books make a nice momento and help keep track of all the places the guests have gone. As I sign the books, I wonder if the customers will look back at the page someday and have fond memories of their stay at our inn here in Nagano's Togura Kamiyamada Onsen.

「日本の国籍は採りますか？」と時々言われます。アメリカの国籍を捨てるつもりはないけれども、取り敢えずは私にとっては日本の永住権が大切でした。そして、昨日、長野の入国センターに行きまして、頂きました。私の人生の中でかなり大きい事でしたが、その事務の方は「おめでとう」も何も言ってくれなくて、がっかりでした。今日は家族を（無理矢理に？）連れて行って、お祝いの夕食しました。

外観は何の代わりもないかもしれないけど、私の中がこの永住権で少し変わったように感じます。亀清旅館の「若旦那」としてさらに身に付きました。

People here occasionally ask me if I am going to take Japanese citizenship. I have no desire to get rid of my American citizenship, so changing to Japanese is not high on my priority list. However, getting Permanent Residency is. And yesterday, I went into the Nagano Immigration office and received it. (I had applied for it back in July.) To me, this was a pretty big event in my life. To the officer, it was just another piece of paper. So in my search for someone to say 'Congratulations!', I had my family take me out to dinner tonight to celebrate.

I probably don't look any different on the outside, but on the inside I feel changed -- thanks to PR, running Kamesei Ryokan is now even more of a life work for me.

この戸倉上山田地区は、温泉でかなり知られていますが、実は農家でも盛んでいます。温泉街から車で４，５分はリンゴ畑が沢山あって、ちょうど今はふじりんごのシーズンが始まっている所です。リンゴ狩りのお客さんが年々に増えていますし、我々旅館の方でどうやって地元のりんごを取組むか、色々と研究して、試してみています。

そして、車で１０分ぐらいは姨捨の「田毎の月」で有名な棚田があります。千曲川沿いにも沢山の田んぼや畑があります。さらしな農業塾というグループがその棚田及び川沿いの畑で活発的に新しい事をやっています。地元の’Ｙｕｍｅ’小麦粉を使ってうどん・おやき作り体験、玉ねぎ祭りを開いたり、小学生に農業体験、等など。

今日はそのさらしな農業塾が「玉ねぎ植えつき体験」を開催しました。私はうちの子供達を連れて、参加しました。玉ねぎの苗を畑に植える手伝いでした。自分たちの手で、愛情をつけながら、一つ一つを植えました。

作業しながら、そして終わってからの食事会で農家の皆様でお話が盛り上がりました。小さい子供達がいたおかげで、農家のおばさん・おじさんたちが喜んでくれて、普段に交流の機会がない農家の方と色々な質問を聞けて、私も嬉しかったです。今回で初めて分かったの一つは、秋の終わりで苗を植えて冬を起こして春で収穫する利用は、同じ玉ねぎ畑は春から夏を通して秋の始まりまでは田んぼとしてお米を育っているから。一年に作物は二回で出来るわけ。なるほど！農家の皆さんの知恵に感心しました。

これからは温泉を楽しみに来る方ももっと地元の農家さん達の交流が出来るように頑張りたいと思っています。農業体験の提供や、亀清旅館のお料理の中で地元で採れる食材を更に取り入れるとか、出来る事はまだまだあります！

The area around Togura-Kamiyamada has an agricultural heritage that rivals our Onsen Town in importance. Just a quick 4-5 minute drive from Kamesei Ryokan are Kamiyamada's apple orchards, and right now the fuji apple season has just started. Every year we see more and

10 minutes away in the other direction are the famous moon-reflecting terraced rice fields of Obasute, and down around the banks of the Chikuma River are many, many more rice fields and farm land for other crops. A group of farmers, some full time and some hobbyists but all with a desire to share their interest in agriculture with others, works several of the fields. The group is called the Sarashina Nogyou (Agriculture) Juku (Study Group) and they run programs with local schools as well as putting on an onion festival for everybody to enjoy.

Today they offered a chance for people interested in farming to help out plant onion seedlings. So I took our kids to the onion fields and had the elderly farmers show us the techniques and had fun getting our hands dirty. During the work and at the lunch afterwards, we got to chitchat with the farmers. They got a kick out of having little kids around, and I really appreciated being able to ask them all kinds of things that I was curious about farming. One thing I learned is why they plant the onions in the late fall, winter them over and harvest in the spring. It's because they then use those same fields as rice paddies for late spring through summer and harvest in the fall. They get 2 crops a year that way.

Hopefully I'll be able to integrate more events like this between the farmers and the ryokan guests in the future!

毎年、我が家族がクリスマスの為に何か手作りのギフトを新しい体験しながら、作ります。この戸倉上山田温泉の「Ｂａｍｂｏｏ」というお店でプリザーブフラワーの飾りを作ったり、軽井沢の信州ハム工房でソーセージを作ったり、など。

今年は戸倉上山田のステンドグラス工房でグラスの箸置きやマグネットを作りに行きました。戸倉駅前の酒造コレクションの中のステンドグラス工房がほぼ一年前に上山田温泉の本通りに新しいお店を開きました。今日は子供達を連れて、初めてステンドグラスの製作を体験しました。親子で楽しい思い出が出来ました。３歳の美咲ちゃんさえできました。

温泉の旅のついでに、家族のオブジェを作ったらどうですか？箸置き（２０分、１０００円）からランプシェード（１０時間、１万円より）まで、お時間と予算に合わせて何でもできます。

Every year for Christmas, the kids and I make something to give to friends and relatives as gifts. In the past, we went to 'Bamboo' here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen to make preserved flower arrangements, and we made sausages at the Shinshu Ham factory in Karuizawa.

Today, we tried making glass art at Yamazaki-san's new Stained Glass Art Studio that opened up on Kamiyamada Onsen's main street this time last year. Our onsen town got some seed money from the Prefecture, and we remodelled one of the storefronts. A soba shop and Yamazaki's stained glass shop opened up on the street level.

Yamazaki-san patiently explained the fine points of making hashi-oki (chopstick holders) and other small accessories to me and the kids. Even 3-year old Misaki-chan got in on the action as we made a bunch of refrigerator magnets in addition to the hashi-oki.

For people who have the time for a leisurly stay at our onsen town and would like to try a family-friendly arts activity, I highly recommend applying your creativity to making stained glass art at Yamazaki-san's shop!

上山田小学校の音楽会に・・・アコーディオン？ At Kamiyamada Elementary School's Music Festival: Accordions?

Accordions at a Japanese elementary school?!

上山田小学校の音楽会は今日でした。自分が評議員のお蔭で、ＶＩＰ席でした。Ａｎｄｙ君（４年生）とＫｅｎ君（２年生）と生徒の皆さんの成長は音楽を通じて、見れました。

特に、金管バンドが素晴らしかったです。小学校で金管バンド何って、私の地元のシアトルで聞いた事がない;大体は高校からですね。

そういう進んでいる所がありながら、一つ「？」と思ったところがありました:　アコーディオンもあった事です。日本の小学校に洋風なブラスバンドが何であるのは別として、アコーディオンは海外で民芸音楽の世界ぐらいにしかいないです。

言わせて頂けたら、
上山田小学校は千曲市の金管バンド有りの小学校として、唯一だそうです；
この上山田温泉に芸者の文化が残っています;
最近の若い女性は三味線や伝統の踊りに興味がなく、芸者さんになりたい人が少なくて困っています;
上山田小学校は三味線や日本舞踊も教えれば、その伝統に興味を持つ方が増えるかもしれない;将来に芸者さんになりたくなるかもしれない。

…と、上山田小学校の音楽会でアコーディオンを聞きながら思いました。

Our local Kamiyamada Elementary School's Music Festival was held today at the Culture Hall here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. As I am one of the outside auditors for the school, I got to attend and sit in one of the VIP seats. It was great to be able to see our Andy (4th grade) and Kenny (2nd grade) as well as the rest of the students exhibit how much they have grown through their musical education.

Most impressive was the brass band. I can't think of any grade schools back in my home town of Seattle that have their own brass band. Most such bands don't start until high school. However, as advanced as that might be, the thing that struck me was the use of the accordions. Whether or not it is good that an elementary school in Japan has a Western-style band is a separate issue, but accordions are an instrument that even in the West are pretty much relegated to folk music.

In my humble opinion,
Kamiyamada Elementary School is supposedly the only one in the city of Chikuma that has its own brass band;
The school is also the local one for this onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada;
Our onsen town still has 35 active geisha, who's numbers are dwindling as the younger generation of ladies aren't interested in becoming geisha;
If Kamiyamada's school also taught shamisen and traditional Japanese dance, then some of the students may develop an interest in those arts;
If they do, then they may consider becoming geisha as they grow older.

Anyways, that was what I was thinking while being entertained by accordions at the school music fair.

亀清旅館の若若女将の七五三で今日、親子三人で善光寺へお参りしに行ってきました。貴重な親子のお時間、贅沢なフランス料理の昼食、紅葉した善光寺…　良い思い出になりました。着物の美咲ちゃんがいつもの女の子となんとなく違う;お姫様の様になりました。ママも頑張って、着物を。上田紬の綺麗な青い着物。（私はただのスーツだったけど、一応、ママと揃う為に上田紬のネックタイにしました。）

Our daughter Misaki celebrated her "Shichi-Go-San" today. Literally meaning 7-5-3, it is a chance for 7-year old and 3-year old girls in Japan dress up in a kimono, and boys when they are 5 years old to dress up in suits, and go to a local shrine or temple for a special ceremony.

So today, we dressed our little 3-year old Misaki in a lovely pink kimono and while her brothers were at school, the 3 of us (mom in blue Ueda Tsumugi kimono and I in my suit -- with an Ueda Tsumugi necktie!) went to the big Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City. Some precious mother-father-daughter time, a luxurious lunch at a french restaurant, and Zenkoji splendid in fall leaves -- it made for a memorable day.
