お客さんから注意事が来ました：亀清旅館にお風呂のマナーが悪い外国人客がいるって噂が広がっている事。

なるほど。亀清旅館のお客さんは約１０％が海外からです。言い換えれば、９０％が日本人です。その９０％の全員はお風呂マナーが良いって事でしょうか？まあ、シャワーかけっぱなしの下で酔っ払って寝ちゃった日本人客さんの話などは別の問題として・・・

亀清旅館では、日本の温泉旅館の代表として海外からお泊りになるお客さんに日本の温泉文化をなるべく教えます。｢これは１００％自然な温泉のお湯なので、不自然な物は入れないでください。シャンプーは無し。石鹸は無し。タオルは無し。水着も無し。｣など、いつも説明します。｢タオルを巻いて入っちゃいけないの？｣と言われますが、｢駄目です」とはっきり教えます。(その代わりに、家族風呂のお時間をなるべく作ってあげています。）

シャワー文化の人たちは日本の温泉文化に慣れるのにどうしてもハプニングが行います。この間は一人のお兄さんがスリッパーを履いて浴場に入ったのを見ました。｢そうか、スリッパーも無しと言わんとあかんか｣と思いました。でも、マナーが悪いという噂を広がる必要はあるか、私に疑問です。

そう外国人アレルギーの方に私からの注意事：日本政府観光局は訪日外客人数の２０１０年目標が１，０００万人です。(２００８年に８，３５１，９００人まで伸びたが、２００９年は減っちゃったからその目標が難しくなちゃった。）２０１６年の目標がその２倍：２，０００万人です。
２，０００万人になると、日本の宿泊施設の泊まる人の約２０％が外国人になる。５人に一人が外国人という訳。そろそろはお互いの文化に慣れる必要はあるのではないかと思います。

One of our guests cautioned us that he heard a rumor: Kamesei Ryokan's foreigner guests have bad onsen manners.

Hmm. 10% of our guests here at Kamesei are foreigners. In other words, 90% of our guests are Japanese. Do all of those 90% have good bath manners? Before I go into the story of how a drunk Japanese person fell asleep with the shower running on him all night, let me explain something.

We see ourselves as a representative of Japan's onsen ryokans to our guests. For some of them, we will be the only ryokan they will ever experience. So we try our best to explain onsen "culture" to them. For example, we tell all of our guests that the onsen is 100% natural mineral water, and that nothing unnatural is to go in -- no soap, no shampoo, no towels, no bathing suits. "What, I can't wrap a towel around me to soak in the bath?" "Nope!" On the other hand, we try to accommodate as best as possible by providing a private bathing time.

However, when you have people coming from a shower culture, there will always be happenings along the way as they adjust to Japan's onsens. The other day, I spotted one guy wearing his slippers into the bath area. I guess I'll also have to say, "No slippers, either!", too.

But I really wonder if the extent of these happenings really justify spreading a rumor about bad manners.

In fact, I have some words of caution to the people that spread such rumors. The Japana National Tourism Organization's 2010 goal for number of foreign visitors to Japan is 10,000,000 people. (The figure reached 8,351,900 in 2008, but dipped in 2009 so the goal is in danger.) But the goal for 2016 is double that: 20,000,000 people. That would mean about 20% of lodgers in Japan would be foreigners. In other words, 1 out of every 5 people staying in places like ryokans would be from overseas. So to people with a foreigner "allergy", I suggest they get used to foreign customs.

昨日は戸倉上山田温泉の隣の坂城町に長野インバウンドサミットの仲間と集まりました。刀匠と人間国宝｢宮入行平」さんの刀道場が坂城町にあります。坂城町がその記念で、｢鉄の展示館」という刀の博物館を作りました。
我々欧米人は｢侍｣とか｢刀｣にものすごく興味があります。ハリウッドの映画の影響かもしれませんが、｢格好いい｣と言うイメージです。そして、欧米の剣と違う作り方だというイメージ、どうやって作るかにも興味を持っている人が多いでしょう。
坂城の鉄の展示館で刀匠はどうやって刀を作るか、見れますし、定期的にその人間国宝の弟子の指導に従って、手つくりでナイフを作る体験も行っています。これは日本に来る欧米人にきっと魅力的だと思いまして、我々長野インバウンドサミットの長野県のユニークな体験を海外の旅行者に知ってもらい、楽しんでもらうプロジェクトと連携したいと思っています。
昨日はその仲間と鉄の展示館の宮下さんと打ち合わせしました。７月４日に次にナイフ作り体験が行いますので、私たちはその時に体験の取材をする予定です。どういう取り組みが出来るか、宮下さんと打ち合わせしました。７月４日の体験の日に向かって、準備しますので、楽しみにしています。ご一緒に参加したい方がいらっしゃれば、どうぞ、ご連絡をください。
ちなみに、ＮＩＳの仲間がせっかく坂城に来てくれたから、鉄の展示館を出てから坂城町の他の魅力スポットをついでに案内しました：ロベニアのチョコ工場と坂城のバラ祭りの公園。(私はいいガイドでしょう？）

Next door to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is Sakaki Town, home of a living national treasure, katana maker Miyairi Yukihira. He has since passed on, but his son and their apprentices continue making katana swords at their forge in town. Sakaki Town has honored Miyairi-san by making the Tetsu no Tenjikan, a katana museum.

Westerners like me are fascinated by katana swords. Perhaps it's due to the influence of Hollywood movies, but we think they are really cool. And there is quite a mystique behind how katana are made.

At the Tetsu no Tenjikan, there are displays of actual katana, as well as the process of how katana are made. In addition, they occasionally offer classes by actual katana makers on making your own knife using katana making techniques.

My Nagano Inbound Summit buddies and I paid a visit to Miyashita-san of the katana museum today to discuss ways the museum and its programs could be more available to visitors from overseas. And on July 4th, Sunday, we will be back to take part in the next katana making class. If you are interested in participating, feel free to contact me!

After the meeting, since Andy and Robert had come to Sakaki, I took them on a side trip to the Lobenia Chocolate Factory as well as the Sakaki Rose Festival. Aren't I a nice guide?

Garbage Enlightenment

世界を旅しているアキラさんとパトリックさんが戸倉上山田に来はりました。おサルの温泉(地獄谷）に行ったり、この上山田お神楽保存会の練習に一緒に行ったり、我が宿Ｃｈｅｆ武井のお料理を思い切って楽しんだり(一品一品写真を撮っていました！)、喜んでくれました。途中で、｢タイラー、質問があります。日本で、どこに探してもゴミ箱がないけど、どうして？」　

行政では、外国人の観光客はどうやって呼べるか、色々と議論する。交通の便とか、看板の多言語化、パンフの作成などなど。

でも、もしかしたら、その以前の問題かもしれない。レストランで食事前におしぼりをくれるけど、食事中の為のなっぷきんはないとか、公衆トイレで手をふくタオルがないとか、ゴミ箱を探すのは大変など。交通便などはいいのですが、｢ゴミ箱いっぱい運動｣とかはどうですか？

とにかく、お二人の帰り、駅への送迎の途中でうちの近所のリサイクル場を案内しました。｢ゴミはこうやって細かく分別しないとだめなんだ。自分の店の前にゴミ箱を置いたら、皆の捨てられたゴミを結局自分で分別するようになっちゃう。だから皆はゴミ箱を置くのは嫌がる」と説明しました。

そして、もう一つの質問が来ました：「日本はゴミ箱がないのに、ポイ捨てられたゴミは見ない。不思議だ！」
ホームレスは少ないし、落書きがほとんどないし、地下鉄は変な匂いしないし、お店の従業員の皆が礼儀正しいし。これは日本の裏の魅力です。海外から来る皆は感じます。

Akila and Patrick are two young travellers making an extended trip around the world. They spent 3 days here at Kamesei Ryokan and thoroughly enjoyed Nagano. They spent a day at the monkey onsen at Jigokudani, accompanied me to my Okagura lion dance practice to see a very un-touristy bunch of locals at our weekly practice, and were mesmerized by our chef's traditional kaiseki-style meal. (I think they took pictures of every single dish!)

One time, they asked me, "Where are all the garbage cans in Japan? We can never seem to find a place to throw away our trash!"

It's funny how bureaucrats spend so much time on projects to increase the flow of foreign tourists -- improving the transportation, multi-language signage, more and more tourist brochures, etc., etc. Maybe it would be better to start somewhere more simple, like putting out more trash cans. Or providing towels to wipe your hands at public toilets. Or having restaurants provide napkins to go with your meal, not just the oshibori wet wipe at the beginning. More airports are great, but how about more garbage cans, too?

On the morning of their departure, on the way back to the train station, I brought them to our neighborhood's recyclng station, and showed them how all the recylables need to be sorted. I explained that if a business owner were to put a garbage can in front of his or her establishment, people would take advantage of it and throw all kinds of garbage into it. Then the owner would be stuck sorting through all of it. That's why no one wants to put out a trash can.

Akila and Patrick had a further comment: Despite the lack of trash cans, there's so little litter in Japan. How paradoxical!

Clean streets with not much litter, hardly any grafitti, few homeless people, subways that don't smell weird, polite service at stores -- these are the hidden secrets of Japan's attractiveness to the world. All of the foreigners to Japan feel and appreciate it, too!
