今年の改善目標、３つの客室の簡単な改造は次の一歩に入ります。
｢松風｣という部屋は蚕棚で庭の塀を作って、アンティークな糸巻きの機械を磨いて、床の間に飾って、もう１つな蚕棚でベランダのテーブルを作って、織り体験して上田紬のウォールハンギングを作って、｢紬｣というコンセプトで改造しました。
｢千歳｣と｢末広｣の部屋はブロック塀を壊して、代わりに手作りの木の塀を付けて、庭師に狭い中で綺麗な庭を造ってもらいました。片っ方に杏の木を植え、もう片っ方にりんごの紅玉の木を植えました。これからはこの２つの部屋を｢杏」と｢紅玉｣というコンセプトで磨きます。
その中で、まずはベランダの古いカーペットを取り外して、木の床材を張りなおす予定です。今日はその床材を買いに行きました。地元の｢上田第三木材｣という会社の｢みすず松｣床材。｢信州林の森の王様｣あか松を使っています。
私達の住んでいる部屋を作った時に、床材に関しては設計士と大喧嘩になりました。というのは、こちらに引越しする前まではシアトルで貿易会社で勤めていました。色々な商品を扱っていましたが、その１つは２ｘ４住宅の材料でした。その時に、かなり良い床材を扱っていて、それに慣れてしまいました。そして、こっちに来て、家族の住む部屋の建築の打ち合わせで設計士がダサい床材のサンプルを持ってきました。これは差別に聞こえるかもしれない；｢鼻が高い｣様に聞こえるかもしれないけど、事実は事実だ：日本の床材はダサい！設計士に｢味のある物を持って来い！｣と言っても、人工くさいダサいのしか出てこなかった。あきらめて、北米から自然で良いのを輸入しょうかと思った時に、上田第三木材さんを見つけました。このみすず松の床材を始めてみた時に、よだれが出そうぐらいに｢これだ！｣と思いました。自然な味がたっぷり出る木です。我が部屋で使って４年間たちましたが、丈夫で良い物です。
今日はかって来ましたのでまた時間を作って、取り付けます。お客さんもみすざ松の床材の木の温もり・自然さを喜んで頂けたら嬉しいです。
This year's major improvement here at our inn is to do a simple remodel on 3 of our guest rooms.
For "Matsukaze", I built a fence for the garden using old silkworm-raising bamboo trays, made a table for the 'veranda' out of another silkworm tray, polished up an antique thread spool to display in the tokonoma alcove, and sat at a loom myself and made a wall hanging at an Ueda Tsumugi weaving shop. All in an effort to remake the room around a "Tsumugi" concept.
For 2 other rooms, "Chitose" and "Suehiro", I knocked down the concrete block walls in their gardens and replaced them with a hand-made woven wood fence. Then we had our gardener make new gardens for the rooms. Chitose's featuring an apricot tree in honor of nearby Mori Anzu-no-Sato (Apricot Village). Suehiro's features an apple tree of my favorite heirloom variety, the tart "Kogyoku". The goal is to remake these two rooms around "Anzu" and "Kogyoku" concepts.
The next step is to get rid of the ugly old carpets in the 'veranda' of the 2 rooms. I am going to install some wood flooring instead. Today I bought the flooring at a local manufacturer, Ueda Daisan Wood Products.
Actually, I have a little story to tell about Ueda Daisan. When we moved here 4 years ago and remodelled some unused guest rooms into our family's living quarters, I had quite a quarrel with the architect over wood flooring. Before moving here, I had worked for a trading company back in Seattle, handling, among other things, building materials. So I was familiar with wood flooring. Good wood flooring. And what I'm about to mention may sound prejudiced and/or stuck up, but a fact is a fact: Japanese wood flooring is ugly. When the architect brought some flooring samples, I told him to bring us something different, something with more character and a natural feel. But all he brought over-engineered bland pieces of imitation wood. Finally I found Ueda Daisan -- the first time I saw their flooring, I almost started drooling it was so cool. And we've had their Misuzu Matsu (red pine from local Nagano forests) in our room for 4 years now, and still love it.
So now that we are putting in wood flooring in these 2 rooms, of course I just had to have Ueda Daisan's Misuzu Matsu. Hopefully our guests will appreciate the warm, natural feel of the wood, too.

亀清旅館の中心の建物、この2階たての大正時代、大広間が２階になっている建物に昨日、今日で大工事でした。先週は屋根の瓦とその瓦を設置していた土の全部を下ろしてもらって、その分で軽くなった建物を今回の工事で沈んでいた角を１０ｃｍぐらい上げました。大工さんの村越さんとのメンバーがハイドローリックのジャックを使って、ちょっとずつ持ち上げました。そして、準備した新しい基礎の上に新しい柱を取り付けました。すごい作業ですが、これだけ良い材料を使っている建物はやはり、大事にしていきたいと思っております。村越さん達の作業を見ていて、一番感動したのは日本らしい柱の留め継ぎ。アメリカの建築で見たことがない！
