新型インフルエンザのせいそから中のイベントが中止になっています。この上山田地区では、なぜか上山田小学校は一人もかかっていないです。（いまのところで！）
その中で、この実行委員長（＝私）の頑固で、戸倉上山田温泉のハロウィーンパーティーが予定通り、行います。子供達は約６０人も申し込んであるので、今度の日曜日（１８日）にこの温泉街を盛り上がります!
それに向かって、昨日はお化け屋敷の準備をしました。千曲サイクリングクラブや上山田神楽保存会の仲間とうちの息子達にも手伝ってもらって、かなり怖いお化け屋敷は無事に作れました。作った自分たちも通ってみたら怖かったぐらい怖いです。テーマは：「新型インフルエンザより怖い」。インフルエンザに負けないで頑張ります!
今年こそ、当日で実施する時に目標は子供を一人ぐらいおしっこさす事です!本気で怖くしたい!

お化け屋敷は上山田温泉の本通、有田屋さんの前の空き店舗でやります。１８日の戸倉上山田温泉ハロウィーンパーティーで午後１時から４時まで行います。

１７日の夜はプレイベントもやります。温泉の宿泊客も楽しんで頂けるようにお化け屋敷を午後６時から９時まで実施する予定です。本格的なお化け屋敷を味わいたい方はどうぞ、寄ってください。

Lately, area events have been getting canceled left and right. It's all due to the swine influenza. Here in Kamiyamada, for some reason not one child at the local elementary school has come down with the flu yet. So far, our town's Halloween Party is going ahead as scheduled. The stubborn organizer (err, Yours Truly) has decided to not lose out to the flu. In fact, the Haunted House's theme for this year is: "Scarier than the Swine Influenza"!
Yesterday, members of the Chikuma Cycling Club and the Kamiyamada Okagura Preservation Society, along with our 2 sons, helped put the House together. We even scared ourselves, it is so scary!

戸倉上山田温泉の温泉街に飲食店が数えないぐらいに多いです。その厳しい競争の中で生き残る為に個性は必要。最近に行った個性のあるお店は２つを紹介します。

おやき専門店「七福」
信州の代表郷土食：おやき。この戸倉上山田温泉に地元で愛されているおやき専門店があります：七福。うわさを良く聞いていましたので先週はやっと始めていきました。温泉街の面白い隅にある（大丈夫かなと思わせるような細い道）小さなお店です。私はおやきの経験がまだ浅いですが、とっても美味しいと思った。特に、焼き立てで熱くて、食べると「美味しくて・・・熱くて・・・美味しくて」の繰り返し。
お店も昭和レトロでいい雰囲気だし、瀬下さんのサービスが親切でよかった。初めてだったのに常連のような扱いしてくれました。戸倉上山田温泉にとっては宝のお店!
（夜１１時までやっていますから夕食でも、夜食でもお勧め。）

インドカレー＆パスタ「モーリ・ドット」
戸倉と上山田のそれぞれの温泉本通りの間にある小さなお店。インドカレーとスパゲティーとピザが主の料理だと分かっていますが、今日に久しぶりに行ったら色々な楽しいコンビがあって、久々に面白かった。納豆スパゲティー（スパゲティーはかわいそうじゃないか？）、カレーピザ、杏カレーなど等。今まではオーソドックスのマトン＆ベジタブルカレーしか食べなかったけど、今日は皆が面白いコンビにチャレンジ！森さん、美味しく頂きました。有難うございました。

Togura Kamiyamada Onsen has more restaurants than you can shake a stick at. With all that competition, each shop has to have some individual style to stick out in the crowd. I recently went to 2 such unique restaurants:

Oyaki Restaurant: "Shichi-Fuku"
For those of you that don't know, "oyaki" is like a heritage food here in Nagano. They are basically little buns with different types of fillings. Each area tends to have its own style of filling, with nozawana and other local vegetables being especially popular. Here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, we are fortunate to have a little restaurant that specializes in oyaki. It is really popular with the locals, so you know it must be good. I finally got to go myself last week. I'd had oyaki numerous times before, but this was my first time to have fresh, hot-off-the-pan oyaki. Wow! Hot and delicious!
And the shop has to be seen to be believed -- talk about "Showa Retro", this is it, man. And Seshimo-san, the owner, is such a kind and friendly lady. She made me feel like a 'regular' even though it was my first time.
Shichi-Fuku is open 'til late at night, so it's great not only for dinners, but a midnight snack, too.

Indian Curry and Pasta "Mori Dot"
I had known this restaurant features Indian curry, spaghetti and pizza, but up until now I had only had their rather more orthodox mutton curry. Today the group I went with explored some of their more creative combinations: natto spaghetti (poor spaghetti!), curry pizza, and apricot curry. Mori-san, thanks for the tantalizing culinary combinations!

連休の週末で宿の方が忙しいけれど、天気が良くて・・・
せっかく自然で恵まれている信州に住んでいるから子供達を連れて、チャリ乗り!
今日は千曲川サイクリングトー度を稲荷山まで通って、そして桑原地区まで登りました。このルートは善光寺街道を通ります。私はの街道に残っている土壁の蔵の雰囲気が大好きです。尚且つ、自転車で通る場合はゆっくり見て楽しめる。

Even though our inn was busy with the 3-day weekend, it was such nice weather...
Since we're living here in Nagano blessed with such beautiful nature, I just had to take a break and get outside. So I took the kids for a nice bicycle ride. We started out riding along the Chikuma River Bicycle Path to Inariyama, and then followed the old Zenkoji Kaido -- the Edo-era road between Matsumoto and Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City. I just love the old earthen-walled "kura" storehouses and buildings that still remain from that period. And seeing them by bicycle allows you to enjoy them at a proper pace, rather than buzzing by them in a car.
I was really proud of Kenny and Andy -- they did really well on their bikes!

2009.10.10: 季節 Seasons

標高３７０ｍの戸倉上山田温泉の中心になるカラコロ足湯の公園の写真です。木の葉っぱはちょっとずつ色が付いてきています。信州のもっと高い高原に紅葉がもっと進んでいます。上高地や志賀高原、戸隠の知り合いと話したら、今年の紅葉は通常より１週間～１０日間ぐらい早いそうです。その分で長く続きそうだそうです。色はちょっと落ち着いているようですけど、最近の晴れている天気にきっと綺麗だと思います。志賀高原の横手山や、上高地の周辺のアルプスは既に初雪になっています。青い空に雪をかぶっている山に紅葉・・・信州の見事の時期だ!

注：戸隠の代表の紅葉スポット、鏡池の道は土崩れで工事中です。週末は中社で駐車（？）して、シャトルバスを乗る制度になっているそうです。１０月いっぱいまで紅葉を楽しめると聞いています。

This is a picture of the park next to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's "Kara-Koro" foot bath. As you can see, the leaves are starting to change color. Our elevation here is only 370 meters above sea level. Nagano's higher elevations are seeing much better fall colors now. I've talked to friends in Kamikochi, Togakushi and Shiga Kogen (some of Nagano's best areas for fall foliage) and this year, the autumn leaves are starting about a week to ten days earlier than normal. Hopefully they'll stay around for longer, too. And although the colors don't seem to be as crisp as some years, the beautiful weather we've been enjoying lately make up for it. Especially as Shiga Kogen's Mt. Yokote and the Alps around Kamikochi have received their first snow fall already. Blue sky, snow-capped peaks and fall foliage -- this is one of Nagano's best seasons!

2009.10.08: 長野に来る理由 Reasons to Come to Nagano

台風18号のせいで、午前中は地元の電車が走らなかったし、ここの上山田小学校が休みでした。しかし、周辺の山が守ってくれたようで、上山田は損害が無かった。心配だったりんご農園も大丈夫だったそうです。

子供達は休みだったのもあって、上田市に連れてきました。
以前に上田の昭和ころからのアーケード、海野町に行きましたが、今回は更に歴史のある江戸時代からの柳町に行きました。柳町がもっと古いのに、海野町ほどさびていないと言うのは不思議でした。やはり、江戸時代の石畳の道や木造の建物は味がある。そして、町の人々の努力のお陰で、その何百年前からの味が今日にも伝われる。
柳町の代表の店の一つはルヴァンというパン屋さんです。自然酵母の利用（不自然な酵母はある？）と言うこだわりのお陰か、おもみのあるパンでこの欧米人の口にとっても合いました。そして、パン屋さんの建物はまたすごいですよ。戸隠の忍者屋敷のパン屋さんの版って感じ。所々に面白い隅があって、色んな楽しいオブジェもあって、とっても良かった。
上田城に行く観光客が多いですが、もうちょっと足を伸ばせばこの柳町にも簡単に行ける。お勧めです!

Due to Typhoon Melor, our local train stopped running this morning, and Kamiyamada Elementary School closed for the day. Thanks to the surrounding mountains, however, the storm didn't hit Kamiyamada very hard. Our area apple orchards fortunately escaped without much damage.
Taking advantage of the kids' day off, I took them to Ueda City. I had been to Ueda's Showa-era shopping district Unno-Machi before. Today we explored Ueda's Edo-era district, Yanagi-Machi. Despite being older by several hundred years, Yanagi-Machi seemed to have more vitality than its Showa-era counterpart. I think it's due to the charming feudal period stone slab streets and classic wooden buildings. Thanks to the efforts of the townspeople, the neighborhood retains much of its historical character.
And Yanagi-Machi's crown gem is definitely the Levain breadshop. Not only is their bread fantastic, but the building is amazing. They pride themselves in using "natural yeast" (is there such a thing as unnatural yeast?) and I'm not sure if that's the reason or not, but the rich texture and full flavor of the bread certainly pleased this westerner's palatte. But the building, oh the building! It reminded me of the ninja fun house in Togakushi with all of its mesmerizing nooks and crannies, let alone the interesting objects and nicknacks throughout the place.
Many tourists go see Ueda Castle. From there, it's an easy walk to Yanagi-Machi -- I highly suggest it.

松茸ときのこなべ Wild Mushrooms "Nabe" Pot and Matsutake

2009.10.07: 亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

日本料理は松茸やきのこのお料理が世界一ではないかと思います。種類もたくさんあるし、松茸の難しい香りを行かせる土瓶蒸しとかはその微妙な香りをうまく生かせる。私もファンになりました。

我が武井板長がこの時期のメニューにこんなに美味しそうな松茸をホイル焼きや茶碗蒸しに使っています。リクエストがあれば、松茸の土瓶蒸しも出来ます。そして，おなべはこのごろ、塩田平のきのこのなべに切り替えました。板長の味付けはまた美味しいもの!

秋の楽しみの料理が来ました!

Japanese cuisine has to be the top in the world when it comes to mushrooms. Not only have they developed one of the widest variety of types of mushrooms, but they've managed to bring alive the subtle fragrances of the queen of mushrooms: Matsutake. Dishes such as "dobin-mushi" (steamed matsutake mushrooms in a soup served in a metal pot) really bring out the flavor.

Our chef has started using these delicious-looking matsutake mushrooms in several of our current menu's dishes, including one where he wraps them in aluminum foil and bakes them, as well as the chawan-mushi egg custard. And he just changed the "nabe" (pot dish) to his fall recipe using wild mushrooms from nearby Shioda-daira.

旅館の経営者としての難しい所の1つは、どの修繕を自分で出来るか、どれをプロの任せるべきかの問題です。自分でやると（やれる範囲の問題であれば）、思う通りで出来るけど、他の仕事が犠牲になってしまう。プロの頼めば、他の仕事が出来るけど業者さんのお金がかかる。

そして、最近に感じていますが、もう1つな問題はプロの仕事は間違えが多いです。お客さんのクレームの原因にもなります。例えば、電気の事で、亀清の客室の照明器具のスイッチは部屋の中ではなく、次の間の外にある。（「部屋の電気はどこで消すか」と言う夜中の電話があったりして。）とか、お風呂の浴場の電気のスイッチは入り口にではなくて、廊下の方にある。（「スイッチが分からなくて、真っ暗の中でお風呂に入った」と言うお客様からのクレームも。）

今までの業者のラフな仕事そのようにお客様に迷惑をかける事だけではなく、建物に損をかける場合もある。亀清の大正時代の建物一部は段々と沈んできているところがあります。床を取ったら、水がいつも入っている。臨時的に固定したが、水の原因が分からなかった。最近はひどくなってきたので色々と見たら、壁の下の水の管はただコンクリートの固まりで止めってあっただけと分かりました。年々にそのコンクリートが溶けてきたので漏れていた訳。誰が水の管をコンクリートでとめる?そのせいで、建物が大分傷んじゃった。大工さんに早急に直すように手配しました。

物が古くなったり、壊れたりの為の修繕は仕方がないけど、以前のプロの手抜きのせいなら許せない。この3週間の間はシアトルのベストフレンド、電気配線専門のMattさんが遊びに来ていましたので二人で上記の問題の全部を片付けた。更に手抜きの仕事の壁（天井）も超えながら。体もそうだけど、精神的にも疲れました。これからは普段の若旦那の仕事に戻るのは楽しみ・・・

One of the difficulties of running an inn is determining whether to fix problems yourself or call in a professional. Doing it yourself (assuming its a fix-it-yourself issue) means getting it done to your satisfaction, but keeps you from other work. Hiring a pro lets you do your regular work but costs money.

If those were the only concerns, it would still be manageable. However, I have come to realize that a lot of time, the so-called professionals do a slack job. Their sloppy work has inconvenienced our guests (light switches for the baths being not at the entrance but out in the hall -- "I couldn't find the switch so I had to bathe in the dark!") but has also damaged our infrastructure (a water pipe capped with concrete!?!? -- the leaking has caused our 100 year building to sink in one corner!)

Repairing things that break is one thing; repairing previous "professional" sloppy work is another. My best buddy from Seattle, Matt, a trained electrician, has been helping me out over the last 3 weeks of his visit. We got most of the problems solved. But it has left me physically as well as mentally drained. I'm looking forward to getting back to my regular ryokan work!

2009.10.04: 亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

先日は亀清の古いパンフを紹介しました。今日はさらに古い紹介を紹介します。有限会社亀清旅館は57年前に１００ｍぐらい離れている所で設立しました。現在の場所は元々「長生荘」と言う旅館でしたので亀清旅館は途中で買い取って、移ったそうです。そのころは旅館の裏が田んぼだったようです。温泉街の端っこだったらしいです。今は完全に町の中になっています。
元々の建物に増築・増築、離れ風の部屋が出来、今のお風呂のある建物（亀清の唯一の鉄筋コンクリートの建物）、そしてこのの亡くなったお父さんが約40年前に写真の建物の手前に現在のロビーを設計して造りました。木造の高さをずいぶん取ったロビーです。亀清の自慢の顔です。当時は周りの皆が逆に木造の建物を壊して、何階建てのコンクリートの箱を作っていたようです。「その高さを取るなら、2階に分けて上に客室を作ればよい」と言われたようです。今になってみれば、この木野ぬくもりのある快適なロビーが宝物です。
時代が変わる、亀清旅館も変わる。昔ながらの良さを守りながら、改善して行って変わる。

A couple days ago, I put up some pictures of Kamesei's old pamphlets. Here are some even older pictures of Kamesei's predecessor, Choseiso. Kamesei was started as a company 57 years ago by our current "Okami" (my mother-in-law) and her mother. Kamesei originally started out at another location approximately 100 meters up the road. Then at some point, Kamesei bought the former Choseiso Ryokan and moved its operation here, the current location. The original building has been added on to and added on to, with the semi-detached rooms built as well as the building that houses the onsen baths (our only ferroconcrete building). Then about 40 years ago, my wife's father (who has since passed away), designed and had the lobby built. He had it build out of wood, with a cathedral ceiling-like grand space inside. Back then, most of the other inns in town were tearing down their wooden buildings and multi-story constructing concrete boxes. Looking back now, we are grateful Mari's dad built this spacious lobby with its warm wood construction.
As times change, so does Kamesei Ryokan. We try to preserve the goodness of its yesteryear charms while making improvements along the way.
