Nagano's Specialty: Raw What Meat?

Foodie

Last night I ate at an Izakaya (pub) in Matsumoto, and the first dish that came out was...raw horse meat.
The first time I came to 'Moto was over 15 years ago, and then, too, I was served raw horse meat. Hmm, I thought, if my friend back in the States who does rodeo found out I was eating horse meat, he'd pound me. But, in the When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do spirit, I partake.
Last night, I again partook. I have to admit, it's darn good. Just don't tell my rodeo friend.

Carrying out the Nagano Inbound Summit

Activities

After over half a year of planning, the Nagano Inbound Summit came to fruition today. The Summit was held at Matsumoto University, with yours truly as the Organizing Chairperson. We were treated to a speach by JR Counselor Mr. Suda, on how Tourism is the glue that brings Industry together, and how Inbound (tourists from overseas) can spark that dynamic. That speach led to the break out sessions with the following 4 themes: 'Nagano Attractions', 'Media', 'Transportation' and 'Networking'. The Summit was too short to produce any concrete results, but all the participants -- government bureaucrats, academics, public transportation, and all of us on the ground -- came to the conclusion that this discussion needs to continue. My thanks to all who participated!

The Pride of Chikuma City: Kogyoku Apples

Miscellaneous

A Geisha Plan Proposal

Miscellaneous

Geisha Proposal

Lately there has been a boom in skiiers coming to Nagano from overseas in the winter, especially Australians. They tend to stay for an extended period, and for their off days, there are popular day trips to see Matsumoto Castle or the snow monkeys of Jigokudani. This year, one local travel bureau is hoping to offer some new tours, and they approached our town's bureau about an 'Onsen + Kaiseki Meal + Geisha Show + Kimono wearing' plan. Kamesei Ryokan has been happy to oblige, and we put together this proposal. We would be happy to arrange something similar for other groups, so if there is any interest, please do not hesitate to contact us.

It's harvest time at the 'Tagoto-No-Tsuki' Rice Paddies

Miscellaneous

Near our Togura Kamiyamada Onsen town are the terraced rice paddies of Obasute called 'Tagoto-no-Tsuki'. Normally I go there at night taking guests on a tour to see the night view, but today I passed through in the afternoon. The view during the day is also so spectacular. It's harvest time now, and seeing the rice put up to dry gives the hillside a timeless feel.

Mushroom Display + Mushroom Master

Foodie

The Man Behind The 'Shrooms

Fall is the season for mushrooms, and every year our town has a Mushroom Display at the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen Tourism Hall. This year's event, weather-depending, is scheduled for October 4th.
I'm always amazed at how many different types of mushrooms there are. One of the main guys who goes out to the surrounding hlls to collect all of them is Chino-san, and his knowledge of the mushrooms is also amazing.
When I first came from America, I was put on to the organizing committee for the town's summer festival. That's when I first got to know Chino-san, as he is the guy that helps out every year with the behind-the-scenes preparations. His charming sense of humor, and his acceptance of my 'gaijin' (foreign) - ness made a deep, positive impression on me. And his wisdom was also so impressive.
Well, I hope Chino-san and the mushroom display deal go well this year.

Fall Festival: Kids Sumo + Okagura

Onsen Town Togura-Kamiyamada

Okagura Performance at the Habeshina Shrine Fall Festival

Today is a long, long day. This morning, as soon as I was done flipping the futons of last night's guests, I changed into my Happi and joined the Okagura Lion Dance troupe for a day of walking all around town and performing as part of the Habeshina Shrine's Fall Festival. We performed at everything from a retirement home to somebody's brand new house. Midway through, we stopped back at the shrine, and got to see some of the kids sumo. Watching the kids wrestle has to be as fun as seeing the big pros. Anyways, I'm taking a quick break from the Okagura tour to come back to Kamesei and flip the futons for tonight's guests. Then it's back out for the 8:30pm grand finale at the Shrine. Like I said, this is a long day. But you know what? I wouldn't change it for anything.
